MLB Opening Day Yankees-Giants Game Set to Stream Exclusively on Netflix in 2026

Major League Baseball is the latest sports league to make a move in the never-ending streaming wars.

According to a new report from Andrew Marchand of , next year's Opening Day contest between the Yankees and Giants will stream exclusively on Netflix. The game is a standalone on March 25, and will formally kick off the 2026 season.

Said Opening Day game comes as part of a three-year deal between MLB and the streamer that not only gives Netflix the 2026 Home Run Derby, but also a piece of the league's special event regular-season games, such as the “Field of Dreams," "MLB at Rickwood Field" and the "MLB Speedway" games. They'll reportedly share these with NBC and Peacock, which are now the new home for Sunday Night Baseball.

"The exact figures for the MLB-Netflix and MLB-NBC/Peacock three-year deals are not yet known, but are expected to be in the $225 million to $250 million per season range," Marchand writes.

For now? We look forward to the 2025 MLB playoffs, which begin next Tuesday, Sept. 30, and won't be aired by a streaming service.

MLB to Implement Challenge System for Balls and Strikes Ahead of 2026 Season

Some welcome news has come across Major League Baseball ahead of the postseason.

As announced by the league on Tuesday, MLB is set to officially implement an Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) beginning next season. Each team will receive two challenges per game that they can use to dispute calls made by the home plate umpire.

ABS was used by MLB this past Spring Training and received rave reviews. The league will now carry it into the 2026 regular season with the same format, allowing pitchers, catchers, or batters to challenge a call after a pitch is made—with no help from the dugout or other players on the field allowed. If a challenge is ruled successful, the team will then keep said challenge.

While the rule change is likely not a direct correlation, Monday night's game between the Brewers and Padres—one with major playoff implications—saw home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz miss 25 calls as San Diego punched their ticket back to the postseason.

With ABS in place in 2026, we will no longer see such a travesty.

Jhoan Duran Electrified New Home Crowd By Setting Phillies Velocity Records

The Philadelphia Phillies hosted the Detroit Tigers over the weekend in what could very well be a World Series preview. They were able to break out shiny new trade deadline acquisition Jhoan Duran twice over the three game set and both times he showcased why he was such an attractive asset.

Duran, who was part of the Minnesota Twins' sell-off, closed Friday night's victory in his debut in front of a raucous crowd and then did the same on Sunday night in front of a national television audience.

Of the 12 pitches he threw en route to picking up the save, four were among the five fastest ever hurled by a Phillie since the StatCast era began in 2008. Two at 102.5 mph, including the one that struck out Riley Greene to end the game, tied the previous record set by Jose Alvarado.

Duran added one at 102.7 mph and 103.3 mph for good measure.

Now, all of that is very exact and scientific. It's nice to have the actual numbers that prove no one's thrown this fast in a Phillies uniform in a long, long time. On the vibes side, one can understand why Philly fans are fired up to watch a new guy really zoom it in there as they compete for the National League East and hope to play deep into October.

Hard to think of a better welcome for the new closer at the end of the bullpen and hard to think Duran could have been more impressive in his new debut.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto Simulator Struck Out a Dodgers Teammate Before World Series Parade

Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto decided to spend a portion of his Monday doing what he does best: pitching—the simulated version of him, anyway.

Yamamoto was crowned World Series MVP on Saturday night after his stellar October performances, from his historic complete game in Game 2 to his clutch close-out in the final key innings of Game 7. After winning baseball's biggest prize, the Japanese star prepared for the team's World Series parade on Monday while his teammate, Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki, had some fun with a Yamamoto simulator in batting practice.

In an Instagram Story shared by Sasaki, the Yamamoto simulator was seen pitching to Sasaki in a practice facility before Monday's championship parade. It seemed like there was some sort of contest going on, as what was presumably Sasaki's other Dodgers teammates could be heard egging on the Yamamoto machine.

"Strike him out! Strike out Roki!" one person said.

The Yamamoto simulator proceeded to do just that, and Sasaki took the loss in stride, captioning the video, "Yoshi is nasty."

Watch that funny moment below:

Yamamoto is just getting his Dodgers' career started, but after two title-winning seasons in L.A., he's already made his indelible mark in MLB history. Coming of this year's Fall Classic, the 27-year-old became the first player to win three games in a World Series since 2001, and just the fourth ever to record a win in Games 6 and 7 of the World Series.

Clearly, he's not finished yet, and neither is fellow Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Kiké Hernandez Thought the Dodgers Lost the World Series When Andy Pages Posterized Him

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was joined by Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Will Smith and Kiké Hernandez as guests on Tuesday night's where they were described as "still moist" from their World Series celebration. The quintet of champions answered some questions while remembering just how awesome that all was for Los Angeles fans—your typical late-night fare.

The highlight was Hernandez revealing that he was under the impression his team had lost the World Series after getting trucked by Andy Pages to end the ninth inning of Game 7.

Hernandez shared the story of how he processed the season-saving play after getting teed up by Roberts.

"Bases loaded ninth inning, ball drops we lose, right" he said. "I get a bad jump because the pitch almost bounced, he kind of put the bat on the ball. I broke half a step in and I'm running. And I'm thinking about my entire life as I'm following this ball and I felt like I ran a 400-meter dash and like as I'm finally about to catch the ball I'm like 'the only thing I've got to worry about is the wall, right?'"

Hernandez assured everyone he was in position to catch the ball before he was blindsided from Pages, who had just entered the game as a defensive replacement.

"Out of nowhere I feel like an NBA player because my teammate posterized me," he said. "I go down and in my head everything is quiet, which should have told me he caught it."

Hernandez said he didn't trust his instincts because he thought his brain was protecting him from heartbreak. And that he only found out the Dodgers had fresh life in extra innings after Pages came over to check on him.

It's an awesome story and an extra bit of lore for an already unbelievable World Series.

How the cricket world reacted to Muralitharan's chucking controversy

Chappell, Benaud and Botham were among those who reacted strongly to the controversial no-ball call

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Apr-2020 #RetroLive This was the third time – all instances in Australia – that Muttiah Muralitharan was called during a live match for throwing. Things came to a head with Arjuna Ranatunga walking off with his team only to resume playing after a 15-minute interval during which many a discussion happened with the officials. A phone call was made back home to cricket board officials too. This is what the experts and the participants said about the incident at the time. The observersThis was the first time Umpires Ross Emerson and Tony McQuillan stood in a game involving Murali since they last called him back in 1996. So there was anticipation even before the actual no-ball call was made.”Quite amazing. The two umpires out there know more than the International Cricket Council. I think it’s all rather pathetic. It is a decision that has been made by some very respected people who have played a lot of cricket at international level and first-class level. And yet two people who might make that decision have played no more than a bit of club cricket.””The English batsmen will be sick in the stomach. I feel a little bit upset myself. Regardless of whether his action is legal or not, that should be decided at the end of the series. This is a team standing behind its bowler who has been cleared by 40 umpires across the world, but here he is called in the middle of the series…”I am a bit lost and saddened by the decisions this afternoon. Murali will be feeling sick in the stomach. He will be very confused. He has got 200 Test wickets. He has bowled a lot of overs in this series so far. Then all of a sudden he has been called for having an illegal action at the Adelaide Oval.””I have been through three of these. The first one was Ian Meckiff in Brisbane in 1963, then the second time was Muralitharan when he was called at the MCG [by Umpire Darrell Hair, whom Sri Lanka got barred from standing in their games]. Today the third time has produced the exact same feeling, which is very empty at the pit of the stomach. The ICC, I think now, will be dragged kicking and screaming into the region of solving the mess.”Getty Images”How come he can’t make a decision on that one with the naked eye and yet he can call the flick of an elbow with the naked eye? Miles out of the ground, but he relies on the replay, which is what he should have been doing with respect to the no-ball.””The fact that this has been allowed to interrupt the day’s play the way it did is quite sad. The thing that you have got to ask of the officials is how come it is allowed to happen in the middle of the arena? This is the third time in Murali’s case that it is happening in the middle of the international arena. All three times in Australia. And you would think that if somebody’s got a doubtful action, they would stop before they get to international cricket.”The officialDoug Insole was member of the ICC committee that cleared Murali, but he explained to Channel 9 the technicalities behind it, and that the on-field umpire had the right to call even a bowler cleared by them. That he said as someone who was called once for throwing, which shocked him too.”Of those that have been seen worldwide as it were, there are one or two who have got perfectly ordinary basic actions, but who stick a bit extra when they try to do a something bit extra. Then there are one or two who have a basic fault in their action. There is no way that ICC can say that that bloke is never going to throw again. You can’t say to an umpire that this bloke is cleared, and he must never be no-balled. What you can say is that as far as the panel is concerned, his basic action, as we have seen it, is okay.”It is a desperate thing to happen to a bowler. I feel sorry for the man himself. You’d be right in saying – and one has to be a bit cagey about this – on the basis of the videotape that we saw, and I can’t remember whether everyone was on the conference call or whether one two were missing or what, but certainly the general opinion at that time was that his action, as seen on that video, was legitimate.”PA Images via Getty ImagesThe participants”The question of Umpire Hair standing had to do with him making some comments prior to the tour in a book that he was publishing. It wasn’t in anyway connected with him no-balling Muralitharan before. As for the other two umpires, there was no question that the Sri Lankan cricket board nor any of the players felt his action was unfair. He had been cleared by 40 umpires all over the world, and a committee that had been set up of eminent bowlers. And one might say, umpires in this tournament as well. So there was never a doubt as far as it was concerned.”Arjuna walked off with his team merely to get a clarification as to how they must proceed. It would have seemed they were leaving the ground, but the basic intention was to find how they should proceed. The point was that the Sri Lankan board would have at no stage wanted the match to be abandoned because after all cricket has to continue and the lofty ideals of the game has to continue. Also we didn’t in anyway want to embarrass the Australian cricket board.”That he is different is one of the problems that has created this illusion: the permanently bent arm of his and that rotation of the shoulder and also the profuse use of the wrists, which I think creates this illusion, which umpires and people find something different in it.””I never thought it will happen because he has bowled all over the world and we have never had a problem. Then suddenly one guy comes and calls, I think it is really unfortunate. I think it is really bad on Australian cricket’s part.”Murali has a really bad arm, everyone knows about it. The person who calls, he must be having a really really good eye. I think any batsman would love to have that eye… the batsman will get thousand runs in two months if that eye comes to a batsman. The way Murali bowls, if you can pick that, he must be really amazing [to be calling him with the naked eye].”We knew we had to win the game for Murali, and that’s what happened today. We have the same umpires in a game towards the end of the tour so we have to take a firm decision what to do. We have to consult with the board and then it is up to the board or the government. It is very important. Murali has been a key person for the country and for Sri Lankan cricket.”I think we never had a problem anywhere except Australia. I think most of the cricketers will try to avoid Australia the way it goes now. And the public has been really bad on Murai, and the media has been really bad. I think it is pathetic that a person who has got 200 Test wickets is only called in Australia. I don’t think he should suffer like this. Everyone likes to come to Australia and do well in Australia but it is totally different the image we have now.””I am not allowed to comment unfortunately due to ICC regulations but what I will say is we have been brought up, if an umpire makes a decision, that’s it, you accept it and get on with the game. Today that didn’t happen.””There you are but again it comes down to the umpire, how he sees things. It is the same with lbw decisions or run-outs or whatever.” RetroLive

Explainer: Men's ODI World Cup Super League

With a handful of days left for the ODI World Cup Super League, here’s all you need to know about it

Sreshth Shah27-Jul-2020Thirteen teams, 156 matches, one champion. The Men’s ODI World Cup Super League has been a long time coming – workshops, meetings and delays enforced by the Covid-19 pandemic included – but with the ICC announcing that the inaugural edition of the tournament gets underway when England take on Ireland for three ODIs starting July 30, the pathway to the 2023 50-over World Cup has been defined.Devised to impart relevance and context to men’s ODI cricket, the Super League warrants that a series featuring lower-ranked sides has just as much importance as those involving the heavyweights, given every game, to some degree, will affect all 13 teams in the league. With new details announced, ESPNcricinfo looks at what the competition offers.Road to the 2023 ODI World CupAside from attempting to make the 50-over format more meaningful to fans, irrespective of their allegiance with the eventual champion, the Super League will also determine which teams get to the next World Cup, to be held in India in October-Novemeber 2023.At the end of the league, India and the top seven teams qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup. For the bottom five, though, their World Cup dreams won’t be over. They, along with five Associate sides, will participate in the ODI World Cup Qualifiers, which will then decide the final two entrants to the ten-team World Cup.Each team will earn ten points for a win, five points for a tie or no result or abandonment, and zero points for a loss. The sides will be ranked according to total points earned across the eight series. Each team will be playing eight other sides in the Super League•ESPNcricinfoLike the World Test Championship, teams won’t be facing every opponentEach team plays only eight of the 12 other competing countries in three-match bouts for a total of 24 league games, meaning four series at home and four away. As per the current Future Tours Programme (FTP) match-ups, that means Rashid Khan will not be bowling to Aiden Markram or Jos Buttler. Nor will there be a Virat Kohli v Mohammad Amir face-off alongside several other match-ups that the ODI league might not witness. There’s another conundrum: a situation wherein a team that wins the league might not even have faced the teams that finish second, third and even possibly fourth on the points table. In that case, are the league winners champions? The discrepancy in match-ups could also affect the World Cup qualification. The match-ups – the ICC had said in 2018 – would be devised according to the ODI rankings to ensure parity.Graphic: Netherlands are guaranteed to play more bilateral ODIs between May 2020 and March 2022 than in their entire history•Datawrapper/ESPNcricinfo LtdWhy is Netherlands the 13th team, and not Scotland or Namibia? The 13th and final spot in the ODI league was reserved for the winner of the World Cricket League Championship, which was won by Netherlands after beating Namibia in their final game. While that has assigned the Dutch regular top-flight cricket – including more bilateral ODIs than they’ve ever played to date – for the duration of the ODI league, they won’t be playing India, Australia, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. Conversely, it also means that these four teams will not have the opportunity to face, arguably, one of the league’s weaker teams. The end of context-less cricket? Not quiteDespite the league’s relatively short window, there will still be some ODI cricket during that period whose results will not count towards it.Sri Lanka are scheduled to play five ODIs against Australia in June 2022, but only the first three games will be part of the league. Similarly, India are supposed to play Australia and New Zealand twice each during the league’s window – but only one of those series will count towards it. Likewise, Afghanistan are slotted to play ODIs against nine teams during that period, but we know only eight of those will be played under the league’s purview.

Has Steven Smith made the fastest ODI hundred for Australia?

Also: who played the most Test matches without ever ending up on the losing side?

Steven Lynch30-Nov-2020Steven Smith scored two centuries in three days against India, both of them coming in 62 balls – has anyone made a faster hundred for Australia in ODIs? asked Brent Franklin from Australia

Those near-identical centuries by Steven Smith against India on Friday and on Sunday come in joint third on Australia’s list of the fastest hundreds in men’s one-day internationals. Their quickest took just 51 balls, by Glenn Maxwell against Sri Lanka in Sydney during the 2015 World Cup, while James Faulkner belted one from 57 balls against India in Bengaluru in 2013-14.Who played the most Test matches without ever ending up on the losing side? asked Sanket Amdalli from the UAE

This unusual record is held by the Indian offspinner Rajesh Chauhan, who appeared in 21 Tests in the 1990s, of which 12 were won and nine drawn. He’s well ahead of the next man, the Australian legspinner Colin McCool, who was never on the losing side in his 14 Tests, ten of which were won. The Antiguan allrounder Eldine Baptiste played ten Tests for West Indies between 1983-84 and 1989-90 and won the lot, another record. The equivalent record for one-day internationals is currently held by another Indian, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, whose nine ODIs have brought eight wins and a no-result. The new South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has played in seven ODIs as I write, and finished on the winning side each time (on the flip side, Nortje has lost five of his six Tests). Is it true that Garry Sobers was supposed to play in the first World Cup? asked Michael Johnstone from England

Garry Sobers – or Sir Garfield, as he’d been since the New Year Honours were announced earlier in 1975 – was indeed in the original West Indies squad for the inaugural World Cup in England. However, he withdrew after suffering a groin strain while playing for Littleborough in the Central Lancashire League. “I would have loved to play,” he wrote. “But I had pulled a muscle and, though it might have healed in the intervening two weeks, I did not believe it was worth taking the risk. Countries had to declare their 14 players in advance, and if someone dropped out there was no provision to call up a replacement.”Rohan Kanhai took Sobers’ place and, aged 39 and greying at the temples, scored a vital 55 in the final against Australia at Lord’s, at one point going scoreless for 13 overs while Clive Lloyd made merry. It meant that Sobers played only one official one-day international, against England at Headingley in 1973, when he was out for a duck (although he did take 1 for 31).Rohan Kanhai replaced an injured Garry Sobers at the 1975 World Cup and made 55 in the final•PA PhotosSix Indian batsmen scored 1 against West Indies at Ahmedabad in 1983-84. Is this a record for the most 1s in a Test innings? asked Syed Nooruzzaman from Pakistan

The short answer is yes: India’s six 1s against West Indies in Ahmedabad in 1983-84 is comfortably a record. Sunil Gavaskar was the first to go for a single, and he was followed by Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev, Roger Binny and Balwinder Sandhu. India, who had needed 242 to win, were all out for 103 (looking on the bright side, at least no one was out for 0). Michael Holding inflicted three of the dismissals. There are ten instances of four batsmen scoring 1 in the same Test innings. When Australia were bowled out for 75 by South Africa in Durban in 1949-50, there were six 2s on the scorecard (including the not-out batsman Bill Johnston). There have been five Test innings that included six ducks, plus six more with five ducks and a 0 not out.Zimbabwe hold the corresponding record in one-day internationals: five of their batsmen made 1 against Bangladesh in Dhaka in January 2005, although only four of them were dismissed: Chris Mpofu finished with 1 not out. There are 20 instances of four scores of 1 in an ODI innings. When Bangladesh’s women slid to 54 all out against India in the opening match of the T20 Asia Cup in Bangkok in November 2016, there were seven scores of 1, including the last five in the order (one of whom, Khadija Tul Kubra, was not out).Did Imran Khan, now the prime minister of Pakistan, play in the McDonald’s Cup in Australia in 1985? asked Farwa from Morocco

The McDonald’s Cup was the name given to the Australian states’ one-day competition from 1979-80 to 1987-88, after which the sponsor changed. Imran Khan had a season with New South Wales in Australia, in 1984-85, as he recovered from a leg injury. He did not appear in NSW’s first two games in that season’s McDonald’s Cup, but he was Man of the Match in the semi-final, against Victoria at the MCG, following 1 for 28 from his ten overs with 73 not out in a seven-wicket win. And he was on the winning side again in the final, against South Australia in Sydney, scoring 36 and taking a wicket as NSW eased to an 88-run victory which formed part of a domestic double, as they also won the four-day Sheffield Shield that season. And there’s a clarification for one of last week’s questions, about players who have appeared for multiple IPL teams, after queries from Sooryanarayanan Sesha and Harbinger Ora:

Irfan Pathan played for five IPL teams – the Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions – but he was also in the Chennai Super Kings squad in 2015, when he did not appear in a match. So he shouldn’t really appear on the list, although he was on the roster of six different squads. Thanks also to those who pointed out that Shaun Marsh was the leading scorer in the inaugural IPL in 2008, with 616 runs for Kings XI Punjab, before he’d played for Australia.Use our
