Jack Morley's six of the best stuns Gloucestershire

Jack Morley claimed career-best figures of six for 55 as Derbyshire dominated the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match with Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.Bowling around the wicket from the Ashley Down Road End, the 23-year-old left-arm spinner sent down 18.2 overs, sparking a collapse that saw the home side crash from 68 for no wicket to 187 all out after winning the toss.Cameron Bancroft top-scored with 58, while James Bracey contributed 47 and there were two wickets each for Zak Chappell and Alex Thomson. By the close of a day in which six overs were lost to rain, Derbyshire had replied with 116 for two, Harry Came unbeaten on 29.Before play began, players, officials and staff from both clubs stood in line to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for Gloucestershire president and former fast bowler David ‘Syd’ Lawrence MBE, who has passed away at the age of 61 following a long battle with motor neurone disease.Just 50 minutes play followed before rain forced an early lunch, taken at 12.30pm. By the break, Gloucestershire openers Bancroft and Joe Phillips, the latter making his first appearance of the season, had put 35 runs on the board in 12.2 overs. There was little sign of the carnage ahead as the resumption at 1.25pm saw Bancroft and Phillips extend their partnership comfortably before Phillips, on 27, drove Morley in the air to mid-on where Ben Aitchison took a good tumbling catch. It was 82 for two when Ollie Price was bowled on the back foot by a delivery from Morley that hurried through and 86 for three when Miles Hammond advanced down the pitch to the same bowler only to miscue a catch to Aitchison at mid-off.Bancroft went to a solid 114-ball half-century, with 8 fours, but fell with the total on 102, caught behind trying to pull a short ball from Chappell. Gloucestershire’s plight worsened when Graeme van Buuren went lbw to Thomson, pushing forward on off stump, and Ben Charlesworth followed for a duck, caught at second slip by Aitchison attempting to drive the off-spinner.At 114 for six, Gloucestershire’s innings looked in tatters. But Bracey and Zaman Akhter stopped the rot with a seventh-wicket stand that was worth 37 by tea, Akhter playing positively before the break, reverse sweeping Thomson for four and off-driving another boundary in the same over. The England Lions all-rounder continued in the same vein after the interval, timing a sweet straight four off the opening delivery of the session, sent down by Chappell, and quickly following up with a boundary through the covers.Bracey had begun his innings with two edged fours wide of second slip off Chappell. But under clearing skies and early evening sunshine, he also found his touch as the stand reached 64 before Akhter was bowled by Morley on the back foot for 32.Australia Test off-spinner Todd Murphy, making his Gloucestershire debut, could score only one before being caught at deep square pulling a ball from Chappell, Aitchison pouching a fourth catch. Ajeet Singh Dale was bowled by a ball from Morley that straightened and when Bracey, having run out of partners, holed out to long-on Gloucestershire had lost all ten wickets for 119 runs in the space of 36 overs.Derbyshire were left with 28 overs to face before stumps. Openers Lloyd and Caleb Jewell took the score to 49 in the 11th over before Jewell, who had just pulled a six off Akhter, fell to the same bowler, edging a back-foot shot to second slip and departing for 32 off 39 balls.Murphy, brought on as early as the eighth over, was unable to pose the problems caused by Morley from the same end, but 19-year-old seamer Archie Bailey struck with his eighth ball on seasonal debut as Lloyd, having moved untroubled to 35, cut a catch to point.Came and Wayne Madsen saw out the remaining overs as Derbyshire reached the close trailing by only 71 runs.

This season's Rashford: Man Utd star is now a big "problem" for Amorim

Manchester United have it all to do this season, having started poorly yet again. Managerial scrutiny is no new thing at the Theatre of Dreams, and Ruben Amorim is very much at the centre of the current struggle at the club, and the pressure is mounting.

It is concerning that Amorim continues to search for his first back-to-back victories in the Premier League. It is concerning that, though we are only six games into the term, the Red Devils are 14th in the standings. It is concerning that Grimsby Town won on penalties to knock Man United out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.

It is more concerning still that banished players from last season are performing with such gusto since leaving Old Trafford, and who could typify that more than Marcus Rashford at Barcelona?

Marcus Rashford's Barcelona glow-up

Rashford was at a crossroads after concluding his loan spell with Aston Villa last season, having been ostracised by Amorim following the Portuguese manager’s arrival in England.

It was generally accepted that the change was needed for the Three Lions star, who has started life in Spain emphatically, scoring twice and assisting four goals across seven matches.

The 27-year-old has long been considered one of the most talented Englishmen of his generation and, indeed, enjoyed several staggering high points at Man United, at times one of the most clinical wingers in Europe.

He is coming back to form on loan with Barcelona, with his show-stopping performance against Newcastle United in the Champions League evidence of that.

However, there’s no question that Rashford was an issue for United last year, and that we might sadly be seeing Amorim’s new version of the talented forward emerging before our eyes.

Amorim's new version of Rashford

This summer, Bruno Fernandes proved his loyalty to Manchester United when rejecting the lucrative advances of Saudi Arabian suitors, but his performances since have left plenty to be desired.

He is the club’s best player. The captain, Fernandes has scored 17 goals and assisted 12 more across 47 matches for Amorim. But he has also presented a tactical quandary, with the manager’s 3-4-3 formation meaning he has been placed into a two-man central midfield.

It is not like Fernandes has not played in a deeper role before. The Portuguese Magnifico’s range of passing and technical command illustrates his versatility. However, rarely before coming under Amorim’s wing had he played in a two-man midfield.

It might be that a more naturally polished box-to-box player could help restore some semblance of fluency to the Man United team, and Fernandes’ frustrations at having missed two penalties already in the Premier League this season perhaps underscore his current plight, typically unerring from the spot.

Fernandes’ application cannot be questioned, and in that way, he differs from Rashford, but the £300k-per-week talent is one of the outfit’s superstars, and once again, Amorim may be dealing with such a big name entering persistent media discourse for all the wrong reasons.

Following the heavy defeat in the Manchester derby, the Independent’s Adam Cleary said that the skipper’s role deep in the centre of the field was becoming a “problem”, for he does not provide the defensive security and roundedness that is perhaps needed.

This is not a slight against Bruno. He is trying to bring it all together for the Red Devils, but fighting an uphill battle, and if Amorim fails to devise a formula for success soon, Fernandes might be following another former United talisman out the door, with hopes of rekindling his finest football before he sinks too deep into his thirties.

The Best 15 Left-Backs in World Football Ranked (2025)

There have been some iconic left-backs in previous generations – from AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini and free-kick specialist Roberto Carlos to Premier League greats like Ashley Cole.

Previously, a top left-back was a world-class defender who could also chip in with the odd goal going forward. Now, we have a new up-and-coming class of attacking left-backs who are crucial to their team’s build-up play, but who is the best in the world right now?

Ranking factors

To help rank the left-backs in order, we have considered the following criteria:

Current form – how well a player has been performing Importance to their teams – how influential they are to their team Role – how unique their skillset is Reputation – what others are saying about them 15 Marc Cucurella Chelsea and Spain

The Premier League has plenty of impressive left-backs, and Marc Cucurella has been making his mark at Stamford Bridge over the last 12 months.

Now one of the first names on the teamsheet under Enzo Maresca, Cucurella has shown why Chelsea splashed the cash on him from Brighton back in 2022.

Maresca called Cucurella “very important” and even wants seven players like him in his Blues side.

14 Rayan Ait-Nouri Man City and Algeria

New Man City signing Rayan Ait-Nouri is another who has been catching the eye at former employers Wolves in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old now holds a career-high €35m Transfermarkt valuation and hit double figures for Premier League goal contributions in what has been a struggling Wolves side.

13 Destiny Udogie Tottenham and Italy

Spurs have seemingly struck gold after signing Destiny Udogie from Udinese, with the Italian’s market value more than doubling since moving to north London.

Once called “the most underrated player in the Premier League” by Paul Merson and a full-back who “has everything” by Luciano Spalletti, Udogie, who is still just 22, may only get better in the coming years.

12 Ferland Mendy Real Madrid and France

Ferland Mendy has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, but when fully fit, is one of the best left-backs around in Europe.

The Frenchman has made more than 200 appearances for Real Madrid since signing from Lyon and was dubbed a “quiet force” by fellow teammate and countryman Kylian Mbappe. Carlo Ancelotti called him “the best in the world”, however, his lack of attacking output has him low down the list.

Since leaving Real Madrid for AC Milan in 2019, Theo Hernandez has gone from strength to strength and has earned the praise of legendary left-back Paolo Maldini, who hailed the Frenchman as “special”.

Hernandez, who sealed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in 2025, also has the blistering pace required to get back from attacking phases and show his defensive qualities.

10 Andrea Cambiaso Juventus and Italy

Arguably a player who has been going under the radar is Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso. Labelled as an attacking left-wing back with “world-class” vision and “elite passing ability”, the 25-year-old’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed to €35m.

Previously linked with Man City, Cambiaso, who actually doesn’t have a weak foot, could soon be the next star left-back to try his luck in the Premier League.

Part of Real Madrid’s youth set-up from 2017 to 2020 before joining Man Utd, Alvaro Carreras is now back at the Bernabeu after impressing for Benfica in recent seasons.

Madrid paid €50m and gave Carreras a six-year contract, and he has slotted straight into Xabi Alonso’s defence.

8 Myles Lewis-Skelly Arsenal and England

Another impressive youngster starring on the big stage has been Myles Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal. The Englishman has even featured as a left-back under Thomas Tuchel with England, despite coming through the Gunners academy as a midfielder.

Mikel Arteta has used the 19-year-old as a left-back at the Emirates, and Jamie Carragher has even compared Lewis-Skelly’s “football arrogance” to Jude Bellingham and Wayne Rooney.

7 Milos Kerkez Liverpool and Hungary

Milos Kerkez only cost Bournemouth £15m from AZ Alkmaar back in 2023, and the Cherries made a nice profit on the left-back who has joined Liverpool.

The Hungarian is already on his way to the top, so it’s no surprise to see the Reds come in for “one of the most talented left-backs in world football”.

6 Riccardo Calafiori Arsenal and Italy

Riccardo Calafiori now appears to have taken over at Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s first choice left-back, with the Italian also capable of filling in at centre-back if required.

Arteta hailed Calafiori’s unpredictability, saying his attacking edge can be “very difficult to control for the opponent”. His stunning first Gunners goal against Man City highlights that.

Tottenham player's drop off in training raises concern despite "very promising start"

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has led his side through an excellent run of form on paper since he replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer, but the Dane still has a few weak areas he needs to address with the help of co-sporting directors Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici.

Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange appointed as Tottenham transfer duo

On Wednesday, the Lilywhites finally announced Paratici’s long-awaited return to N17 as an official employee, with CEO Vinai Venkatesham electing to follow through on the Italian’s appointment after Daniel Levy’s departure briefly threatened the move.

The transfer chief, who played a major role in the signings of Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro and Djed Spence, among others, joins forces with Lange as the pair tackle Spurs’ recruitment drive together.

This significant change in the boardroom comes almost immediately after the Lewis family pumped £100 million of new capital into the club last week, with Tottenham clearly building the foundations for what they hope will be a successful era post-Levy.

In the build up to January, Lange and Paratici, who had been working as a consultant for months prior to his official return, have already been tipped to bolster a few key areas of the squad.

Tottenham are believed to be targeting a new centre-back and winger, after failing to sign Savinho in the summer, with a prolific striker also on the agenda amid reports that they’ve held discussions over Juventus star Dušan Vlahović.

Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic

Spurs were admirers of the Serbia international during Paratici’s last spell at N17 in his previous managing director role (Sky Sports), and the 53-year-old’s ties to Juve could potentially reopen that door.

Meanwhile, there are some concerns from critics over goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who’s come under fire recently for a lack of command in his area when dealing with crosses.

This nearly resulted in Joe Rodon scoring for Leeds in their last match before the international break, but it is worth noting that Vicario also pulled off a string of excellent saves at Elland Road.

Antonin Kinsky drops off in Tottenham training amid Vicario concerns

When asked if Spurs should be looking at an alternative goalkeeper in January, BBC journalist Sami Mokbel moved to defend the Italian in a Q&A — whilst also making an intriguing claim about Antonin Kinsky and an alleged drop-off behind-the-scenes.

The 22-year-old is still very much in his infancy when it comes to goalkeeping years, and Vicario’s comeback unfortunately spelled the end of his brief run in the team.

Starting for Spurs regularly after his £12.5 million move from Slavia Prague last January was a very exciting time for the Czech ace. Taking that into account, Vicario’s emerging presence would’ve undoubtedly demotivated him — knowing that a return to the bench was imminent.

A Levy meeting with Kinsky’s father apparently sealed the keeper’s transfer to Tottenham nearly a year ago, but he’ll struggle to get consistent game time ahead of Vicario if his first-team rival continues to impress with match-winning saves akin to his Leeds heroics.

Bayern go for Marc Guehi? Chief Max Eberl sends out strong message on talk of move for Crystal Palace star

Bayern Munich chief Max Eberl has seemingly confirmed that the club will pursue a move for Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi as the German champions look to bolster their backline. Guehi, who is in the final year of his existing deal at Selhurst Park, has been linked with a move away from the club next summer as a free agent, with clubs including Liverpool and Inter in the race to sign him.

Bayern Munich officials met Guehi's agent

Sky Germany journalist reported on Friday that Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl held discussions earlier this week with Guehi's agent Gordon Stipic to assess the terms of a potential deal. The Bundesliga champions are preparing for defensive changes, with uncertainty over star defender Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension and the possibility of South Korea international Kim Min-jae being sold.

The meeting showcased the Bavarian club’s first significant step toward securing the England international, who is set to leave Crystal Palace after rejecting a new contract in the summer. With his current deal expiring in 2026, his refusal to renew his deal makes an exit inevitable next summer. Guehi could also be sold for a minimal fee in January’s winter transfer window.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesEberl sends strong message on Guehi interest

When asked about Bayern's discussion with Guehi's representatives, sporting director Eberl told : "It's absolutely clear that we as Bayern Munich are exploring the market. Our clear goal is to extend Upa's contract. That's our ultimate goal. If that doesn't work out, we have to be prepared. We would be foolish not to. That's the reason. I've not confirmed anything, but we are active in the market."

Glasner confirmed Guehi will leave Palace

Earlier this month, Palace boss Oliver Glasner had revealed that Guehi is almost certain to exit Selhurst Park after he refused to put pen to paper on a new contract. Glasner had said: "I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'no, I want to make something different'. And that's normal. And for us, it's how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together."

further reported that Palace might consider selling Guehi for a nominal fee to a European club in the upcoming January transfer window to make as much money as possible from the deal to further finance their transfers. The London club were initially happy to allow the centre-back to run down his contract but they are now planning to make more additions to their squad in January and for that, they would need funds, which Guehi's transfer will enable. Glasner's side are currently ninth in the Premier League table, with their only defeat coming against Everton in a result which ended a remarkable 19-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

Getty Images SportLiverpool remain in hunt for Guehi but will face stiff competition

Among the Premier League clubs, Liverpool have remained the front-runners to sign Guehi since the summer. During the last transfer window, the Reds pushed till the very end to secure a transfer for the Englishman but Palace were determined to retain his services, especially after key attacker Eberechi Eze left for Arsenal. The Reds continue to remain interested in the defender amid concerns over Ibrahima Konate's future at the club, as the Frenchman is yet to sign a new deal and has also been targeted by Spanish Real Madrid.

If Konate leaves next season, the English champions will have to find a suitable centre-back who can pair up with Virgil van Dijk, while also replacing the experienced Dutch defender as the leader of the backline in future. However, Liverpool will face stiff competition from clubs across Europe. have reported that Serie A giants Inter are the latest club to enter the race to land the coveted signature of Guehi. The Nerazzurri are planning to propose a January transfer exchange involving Yann Bisseck. The Koln-born defender was approached by Palace in the summer, as the English side tabled a €35 million (£30m/$41m) offer. Both the Italian side and the player rejected the proposal, with Bisseck opting to continue at Inter after making 46 appearances last season.

Clattenburg admits Everton decision he got "completely wrong" that left Moyes fuming

There isn’t a job in football that comes under more scrutiny than that of a referee. Whether it’s jeers from the stands, managers from the dugout or players within touching distance, criticism is often everywhere to be seen no matter the reason for certain decisions. And that’s even been the case for some of the best referees to step foot in English football.

"Sir Alex gave me the hairdryer treatment!" – Peter Walton reveals the life of a Premier League referee

Read our exclusive chat with former Premier League referee Peter Walton.

ByBen Goodwin Apr 2, 2025

Mark Clattenburg is considered one of those. The 50-year-old took charge of some of the biggest games that both English and European football has to offer during his 11-year spell in the centre circle, including the Champions League final in 2016.

Since then, he hasn’t been afraid to reveal all about the career of an experienced referee, telling stories about arguments with Jurgen Klopp and even taking aim at current PGMOL head chief Howard Webb.

Clattenburg also isn’t the first ex-Premier League referee to be so open about his career. Graham Scott recently appeared on talkSPORT to speak about the frustrations of VAR and why he felt sorry after ruling out Alexis Mac Allister’s wonder goal a few years ago.

He said: “Off the field you can’t control anything and the noise now is insane. It’s almost unbearable and it becomes an extremely challenging role. Then, layering on top of that being VAR, as I’ve tried to convey in my piece, being a VAR is utterly unenjoyable.”

Now, Clattenburg has explained a regret of his own and one that left Everton boss David Moyes fuming several years ago.

Clattenburg: I got Everton decision "completely wrong"

Speaking on the Daily Mail Sport’s Whistleblowers podcast, Clattenburg revealed he got one Everton decision “completely wrong” in the 2007 Merseyside derby. The referee sent off two Everton players that day, with one being Tony Hibbert and the other being Phil Neville, which sparked fury from Moyes.

Clattenburg also failed to award the Toffees a late penalty when Jamie Carragher hauled Joleon Lescott to the ground, which he has now admitted was the wrong decision as the Red went on to seal victory.

Moyes was left incredibly frustrated after the game and told reporters: “You wonder whether they allow themselves to be influenced by the top four. Didn’t Clattenburg go to Hong Kong with Liverpool for the Asia Cup this summer? Maybe he wants to be their friend.”

MLB Player Props: Here’s What the Market Is Predicting for Yankees Slugger Aaron Judge

Aaron Judge’s player prop futures are out now for the 2024 season.

Here are the current home run and RBI markets for the Bronx Bomber:

Home Runs: 44.5
Over (-110) | Under (-110)

RBIs: 112.5
Over (110) | Under (-110)

Judge is just one season removed from a 62-home run, 131-RBI season for which he earned his first AL MVP award, and the sportsbook is expecting big things again from the New York Yankees slugger.

Kim Klement Neitzel/USA TODAY Sports

Despite playing a career-low 106 games last season, primarily due to a freak toe injury, Judge hit 37 home runs and logged 75 RBIs. That would equate to 56 home runs and 115 RBIs in a 162-game season, and those 56 bombs would have again led MLB. He led the league with a 64.2% hard-hit rate, 97.6 mph average exit velocity and 14.4% barrels per appearance.

Most projection systems have Judge exceeding the above home run total. His skills did not regress much from his 2022 MVP season, and health looks like the only thing that would keep him from having another MVP-caliber season.

If you’re willing to bet on Judge’s health, he is also the favorite to lead the league in home runs (+350), with Matt Olson (+600), Pete Alonso (+700) and Kyle Schwarber rounding out the top four.

Let’s examine his RBI prop. Hitting behind Juan Soto, who has an elite career wOBA of .400, Judge should have plenty of opportunities to rack up those counting stats. However, there is a possibility that Soto clears the bases with some RBIs of his own, leaving fewer opportunities for Judge.

Judge exceeded these home run and RBI totals in his 2017 and 2022 seasons.

Perhaps the best value, however, is to bet on Judge to lead the league in RBIs for +800. Derek Carty’s The BatX projection has Judge slated for 112 RBIs, which is also projected to be the most in MLB, though it still goes under his RBI prop. If I’m tying up my bankroll for the season, I’ll take the risk for the 8-to-1 payout. According to the sportsbook, only Yordan Alvarez (+650) and Soto (+750) have better odds than Judge. Alvarez has health issues, and Soto might struggle a bit under the microscope of New York. Judge looks like a solid play.

Finally, Judge is the favorite at +550 to win the AL MVP again in 2024, just ahead of Soto (+600)
