'Bizarre' toe injury no hurdle as Johnson returns to BBL in style

Spencer Johnson’s toe injury – which he has called “bizarre” – has left several sports physicians and surgeons baffled. He snapped a tendon in the middle toe of his right foot during South Australia’s Sheffield Shield game against Western Australia last month. Johnson, 29, bowled 45 overs in the match, just the sixth first-class appearance of his career, on the back of playing four white-ball games against Pakistan in the span of eight days.It had kept him on the sidelines for a month and he missed defending BBL champions Brisbane Heat’s opening two games of the season. He, however, showed no visible signs of discomfort in an outstanding return on Boxing Day, where he claimed career-best BBL figures of 4 for 20 in Heat’s 33-run loss to Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium.”To be honest, we still don’t really know how it’s happened or why it’s happened,” Johnson told reporters after the match. “I think four surgeons have looked at it, four sports doctors have looked at it, and they are all mindblown.”I think we just manage it and look after it and hopefully it will be all good.”The pain is not constant but strapping is required, which is unusual for a toe and involves a rather complicated process. “It’s pretty hectic,” Johnson said of the strapping. “It really only hurts when I curl over or claw over. We’ve sort of stopped it from curling over [with the strapping] and that seems to work.”We’ve come up with a decent method to strap it and hopefully that will be all right for the rest of the season. It’s such a bizarre injury, I could wake up tomorrow and it could be all right. We’re looking after it, we’ll manage it.”Given the situation, Johnson’s comeback against Scorchers was made even more impressive. He relished bowling on Optus Stadium’s hard and fast surface, unleashing a hostile spell with the new ball where he dismissed opener Finn Allen for a duck.In what has become a trademark, Johnson consistently hurried the batters on a back of a length. He claimed the wickets of Cooper Connolly, Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar with short deliveries in the backend of Scorchers’ innings. Johnson, importantly in white-ball cricket, is also adept at being a defensive bowler with his accurate full-pitched deliveries hard to score off.The 5 for 26 against Pakistan in Sydney last month was Spencer Johnson’s best day out in Australia’s colours•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

“It was nice being back in the Brisbane Heat shirt,” Johnson said. “It [toe] felt good out there.”Having starred in the BBL over the past couple of years, including a match-winning 4 for 26 in last season’s final against Sydney Sixers, Johnson is on the fringes of Australia’s white-ball teams – he has played ten white-ball internationals since debuting in South Africa in August 2023. Johnson produced his best international performance when he claimed 5 for 26 against Pakistan in the second T20I at the SCG – the best figures by an Australian quick in the format.”Five wickets for Australia… sounds a bit weird,” grinned Johnson. “Doing it at the level above helps [build confidence].”After a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign this year, an ageing Australia might go through a transition ahead of the format’s next showpiece event in early 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. If his troublesome toe doesn’t flare up, and he can stay fit, Johnson should be an appealing option.”I think for me, just staying on the park and keeping my body healthy is the main thing,” he said. “Hopefully the performances will keep coming.”

No clarity yet on Rohit travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

The captains event is tentatively scheduled around February 16 or 17 in Karachi

There is no clear answer to whether India captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan for the ICC’s official captains call to ring in the 2025 Champions Trophy. The captains event, which as per practice happens in the host country, is tentatively scheduled around February 16 or 17 in Karachi, but the BCCI is yet to get any official communication on it from the ICC.”It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet,” Devjit Saikia, the BCCI’s newly-appointed secretary, told ESPNcricinfo. It could not be confirmed whether the BCCI would need the Indian government’s permission for Rohit to travel to Pakistan.Related

Champions Trophy 2025: Dubai to host all India matches, including the knockouts if India qualify

Hybrid model agreed for Champions Trophy and ICC events from 2024-27

Due to the climate of political tension between the two countries, India and Pakistan have played no bilateral series since 2012, but continue to meet at ICC tournaments. While Pakistan have travelled to India for ICC tournaments in this period, India have not played any international cricket in Pakistan since 2008.With the BCCI insisting that India would not travel to Pakistan for their matches, the ICC in co-ordination with the PCB, the tournament hosts, decided upon a hybrid model for ICC events until 2027, with Dubai named as the host of India’s Champions Trophy games. While there is no recent precedent for an India player visiting Pakistan in an official capacity, there is one involving BCCI officials. In 2023, Roger Binny and Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI’s president and vice-president, travelled to Lahore for an official PCB dinner during the Asia Cup, after being invited by the then PCB chair Zaka Ashraf. It is understood that the PCB has requested the ICC to ensure that, as per standard practice, all teams and captains are available for the Champions Trophy photoshoot, opening ceremony and other pre-tournament engagements. The ICC, it is understood, is still finalising logistics and travel dates for teams.Incidentally, the ICC did not organise a captains event ahead of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. With teams playing warm-up matches in several countries, the ICC instead opted to do the official launch via a lighting projection show that featured all 20 captains beamed onto the Rockefeller Centre building in New York City. It is understood that like in the 2024 T20 World Cup, teams will have the option of playing up to two warm-up matches each depending on their arrival time for the Champions Trophy.Saikia: ‘BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule’Saikia, meanwhile, has clarified that India will adhere to the dress code set by the ICC for the Champions Trophy, responding to media speculation that the BCCI had objected to the host nation’s name on their jersey. Player jerseys during ICC events usually include the tournament logo with the name of the tournament, host country and year below it.”BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule during Champions Trophy,” Saikia told . “Whatever the other teams will do regarding the logo and dress code, we are going to follow in true letter and spirit.”

Chelsea player ratings vs Manchester United: Red card for Robert Sanchez and injury to Cole Palmer compound Chelsea woe in loss to Red Devils

Chelsea couldn't recover from their goalkeeper's costly early red card as they suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season. The Blues shipped two goals after the Spaniard was dismissed, courtesy of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, who was also sent off, and despite Trevoh Chalobah scoring late on, they succumbed to a 2-1 loss, with Cole Palmer having gone off injured.

Chelsea began this chaotic game in nightmarish fashion when Sanchez was shown a straight red after felling Bryan Mbeumo inside five minutes. And almost immediately after, the goalkeeper's replacement, Filip Jorgensen, was picking the ball out of his net in the 14th minute thanks to Bruno Fernandes' well-taken opener.

Things went from bad to worse for the Blues when Palmer limped off injured, and then Casemiro made it 2-0 with a close-range header after the Blues failed to clear their lines before the break. The visitors got something of a reprieve in first-half stoppage time when United's Brazilian midfielder needlessly brought down Andrey Santos to pick up his second yellow of the contest, and then Chalobah's 80th-minute header set up a nervy finale. But it was too little too late as a wretched opening proved the west London team's undoing on sodden Saturday evening.

Robert Sanchez (1/10):

The Spaniard was sent off in the fifth minute for an ungainly last-man challenge on Mbeumo. Pressure will be mounting on the 27-year-old going forward.

Reece James (5/10):

Made a brilliant last-ditch tackle to stop Patrick Dorgu getting his shot away right at the start of the game but then he made a real hash of clearing the ball for United's second. Whipped in a good assist but still struggled.

Wesley Fofana (4/10):

The former Leicester City defender was part of a shambolic defence in the first half and nobody is really putting their hand up to say, 'I am Chelsea's best defender'. Looked to have picked up another injury as well.

Trevoh Chalobah (5/10):

Was outjumped by the 6ft 5in Benjamin Sesko, and moments later, Chelsea were a man down. Was unusually sloppy on a day to forget for the Blues but took his header well.

Marc Cucurella (5/10):

The left-back was one of Chelsea's better players, but in the grand scheme of things, that meant diddly squat.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Moises Caicedo (6/10):

The midfielder almost single-handedly tried to stop the Chelsea dam from bursting. One of the few players not to have his reputation hurt by this match.

Cole Palmer (N/A):

Cut a crestfallen figure when he, too, was withdrawn, this time after 20 minutes. The England international left the pitch entirely, soon after, as it looked like he had an injury.

Enzo Fernandez (4/10):

Didn't make much of an impression and did not look at all comfortable in the Manchester downpour.

AFPAttack

Estevao (N/A):

The teenager was also taken off before he could make an impact on the game.

Joao Pedro (6/10):

Seemed to be Chelsea's soul-surviving hope on a rudderless, shipwrecked vessel. Wasn't quite as effective in the second half, mind.

Pedro Neto (N/A):

Was one of the unlucky players to be withdrawn early after Sanchez's red.

Filip Jorgensen (5/10):

Came on in the fifth minute after Sanchez's dismissal, and despite conceding early on, he did fairly well under a United siege. Still doesn't look like a long-term answer for Chelsea.

Tosin Adarabioyo (3/10):

Was beaten far too easily on too many occasions as his touch and defending let him down.

Andrey Santos (5/10):

Worked hard but didn't offer much quality or go forward in the centre of the park. This wasn't really the game for him.

Malo Gusto (4/10):

Didn't do much in defence or attack when brought on in the second half.

Tyrique George (6/10):

Added a bit more energy, which was greatly needed, off the bench.

Enzo Maresca (4/10):

His team had a nightmare start after being reduced to 10 men early doors and then conceding not long after. It is never easy to be a man down so early on but his substitutes were very, very puzzling and had little to no effect.

Berta to make formal £52m Arsenal bid for player in the next few days

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is readying an offer for their potential seventh signing of the summer, which is expected to be placed in the next few days, according to a new report.

Arsenal reach part £30m "agreement" to sign player who Arteta really wants

The Gunners are making progress.

Following another season of near-misses, the Gunners have committed to backing Mikel Arteta once again, and their business so far reflects a side serious about ending their two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title.

The blockbuster, headline-grabbing signing has been that of Viktor Gyökeres, who’s widely seen as the final missing piece of their jigsaw.

Arsenal finally secured the Swedish striker from Sporting CP in a deal worth up to £64m, including add-ons, with Gyokeres making his long-awaited debut against Tottenham in the first overseas north London derby ever on Thursday.

Berta has been a long-time admirer and sees him as the clinical, physically dominant number 9 which Arsenal have seriously lacked. The 53-year-old apparently pushed to sign the 27-year-old over fellow top striker target Benjamin Sesko (Simon Phillips), with Berta finally getting his wish last weekend.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal to complete his hat-trick

Gyökeres arrives off the back of another phenomenal season in Portugal, scoring 54 goals in all competitions, and he could be the difference between success and another ‘close but no cigar’ season for Arsenal.

Despite spending upwards of £200m already on fellow new arrivals Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera in that order, Berta’s business may not be done.

Talks continue with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and his representatives, as per Fabrizio Romano, with Arteta keen on the England international who could provide more creativity, ball progression and a serious goal return from midfield.

Arsenal missed the deadline to trigger Eze’s £60m release clause, which expired on Friday at 11:59pm, but it was never their idea to activate it anyway, as Berta looks to strike a cheaper deal for him.

Arsenal poised to make "formal" Eberechi Eze bid early next week

Football Transfers have an update on the matter, after the outlet’s previous claim that Arsenal have agreed to pay £30m on a ‘first down payment’ for Eze.

Eberechi Eze for Crystal Palace.

Arsenal are now stepping up their pursuit of Eze, with FT reporting the club are preparing a “formal” £51m bid to tempt Palace, which would be made up of the £30m down payment and a further £22m to be paid over the next two years.

Berta’s offer for Eze will apparently be submitted “early next week”, so in the next few days, with talks intensifying behind the scenes and the Gunners ready to make their move.

Eze would be an ideal fit for Arsenal as a central playmaker, and a different threat to captain Martin Odegaard.

The “unique” forward racked up eight goals and eight assists in just 34 Premier League appearances last season. That’s a goal involvement every other game, and his creativity went even deeper than that.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzeposes with the player of the match trophy

Eze also ranked in the 94th percentile for key passes and expected assists, with 2.06 key passes per match (Footy Stats) – dazzling around the box and completing over two successful dribbles per game too.

Arteta’s side often struggle against teams in the low block, as evident by their goalscoring record in 2024/2025, but Eze’s proven creativity could seriously help to solve this glaring issue.

'We're going to kill them' – Benfica release footage of Jose Mourinho's X-rated dressing room speech before first game back in dugout for Portuguese giants

Benfica have released behind-the-scenes footage from Jose Mourinho’s first game back at the club, with the outspoken Portuguese delivering an X-rated team talk to his players before heading into action against AVS Futebol SAD. The ‘Special One’ is back where it all began for him, having returned to his homeland, and has clearly lost none of his passion for his game.

  • Mourinho back where it all began

Mourinho took his first tentative steps in management with Benfica in 2000, but lasted just 11 games at the helm before changes at boardroom level led to him handing in his resignation. Some 25 years later, one of the most recognisable figures in world football is back at Estadio da Luz.

From humble beginnings, Mourinho has come a long way – winning countless trophies across spells with Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma. He was cleared to take the reins at Benfica after being sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce.

  • Opening win: Mourinho's first game back at Benfica

Mourinho enjoyed a productive homecoming against struggling AVS, with Benfica easing to a 3-0 victory over rivals that sit bottom of the Portuguese top-flight. He had his players fired up for that contest, with dressing room footage being aired.

  • What Mourinho said in passionate team talk

Mourinho told his squad before they headed out onto the pitch: “Winning at Benfica is beautiful. Playing at Benfica is f*cking tough. Losing at Benfica is f*cking tough. Man Utd "advancing" in deal to sign target who’s already said "yes" to move

Hoping to land an instant upgrade, Manchester United are now reportedly “advancing” their deal to sign a summer target who has already said “yes” to an Old Trafford switch.

Amorim "excited" by Fulham trip

Three or four months ago, Ruben Amorim and almost everyone involved at Manchester United would have been dreading the next game. The Red Devils languished in the bottom half and endured defeat after defeat in their worst-ever Premier League campaign. Months later, however, their opening-day display against Arsenal – even in defeat – has handed those at Old Trafford plenty of room for renewed optimism.

Perhaps for the first time since arriving, Amorim is “excited” by his side as they head to Fulham in search of their first win of the season. And whilst there must be caution around his fresh perspective, the prospect of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko starting together for the first time is enough for most involved at the club to remain upbeat.

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha

Alas, there is still one major concern for INEOS to address and that lies between the sticks. For all their hard work last weekend, Manchester United suffered defeat against Arsenal after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir flapped at their first corner of the game to allow Riccardo Calafiori to bundle home.

A bigger impact than Sesko: Man Utd holding talks for "special" £51m talent

Manchester United remain active in the transfer market as the end of the month looms large.

1 ByAngus Sinclair Aug 23, 2025

It’s been a key factor in Amorim’s downfall since stepping into the technical area, with Andre Onana also often at the centre of moments to forget, but recent transfer rumours suggest that United could be about to land a major upgrade.

Man Utd "advancing" in Senne Lammens deal

According to Fabrizio Romano, INEOS and Manchester United are now “advancing” in their deal to sign Senne Lammens, who has already said “yes” to a move to Old Trafford from Royal Antwerp this month. Whilst earlier reports suggested that Manchester City could swoop in before the Red Devils, it now looks as though the goalkeeper is United’s to lose.

Praised for a “superb” season by scout Jacek Kulig back in June, Lammens would be an instant upgrade on both Onana and Bayindir. Alongside Mbeumo, Sesko and Cunha, the goalkeeper would represent an incredibly solid summer by all involved at Old Trafford.

Rangers in advanced talks to sign deadline-busting attacker with Chermiti

Following the departure of Hamza Igamane, Rangers have reportedly entered advanced talks to sign an instant replacement for their star man before the deadline.

Latest on Rangers' transfer targets

It’s been an incredibly frustrating start for Russell Martin at Ibrox and the former Southampton boss only had his misery compiled by Igamane’s exit earlier this week. After the forward refused to come from the bench for the Gers in their draw against St Mirren, his departure seemed inevitable and that proved to be the case when LOSC Lille came swooping in.

Finding a replacement for Igamane will not be a routine task, but it is one that the Gers must complete before Monday’s deadline. Just who emerges as the ideal candidate is the big question.

Already, names like Youssef Chermiti have been mentioned and he looks set to make the move to Glasgow. At 21 years old, the Portuguese forward is full of potential even after a difficult run at Everton. And, as we’ve seen all summer, Martin is often keen to welcome reinforcements from English football.

Of course, whoever comes in must hit the ground running. The last thing that Martin needs is another struggling star given how the pressure is already mounting.

After a 9-1 humiliation across two legs against Club Brugge and a difficult start in the Scottish Premiership, questions are already being asked of Martin and ones that he’d have liked to avoid so early into his tenure.

He told reporters after exiting the Champions League on an evening to forget: “To the fans, I have nothing but an apology. I’m very sorry they had to witness that. It’s humiliating and it’s painful. There’s disappointment and hurt that they’ve had to go through that.”

Rangers in advanced talks to sign Diakite

As reported by Afrik-Foot, Rangers are now in advanced talks to sign Oumar Diakite from Stade Reims. The 21-year-old forward could be an addition with Chermiti and a replacement for Igamane. Like the Everton forward, however, the Ivory Coast ace is a player who is yet to reach his full potential and may not hit the ground running at Ibrox.

Rangers tipped to hire Russell Martin replacement in "box-office" move

The tactician is already attracting huge criticism.

2 ByEmilio Galantini Aug 30, 2025

The Stade Reims attacker managed just four goals in all competitions in the last campaign and would be filling the role of Igamane, who managed as many as 16 goals for Rangers in all competitions. Replacing that quality has already been an issue for Martin, but there’s no guarantee that Diakite would be the solution for that problem.

With the Igamane money to spend, the chance is certainly there for the 49ers to welcome a key addition before Monday’s deadline. But they must spend it wisely. Martin needs a proven, consistent goalscorer and not a gamble. Nonetheless, if reports are anything to go by, then Diakite could be an unexpected option to reignite Rangers’ frontline this summer.
