West Brom could repeat their Maja magic by signing EFL star for £0

It’s a step into the unknown for West Bromwich Albion next season with Ryan Mason at the helm.

Appointing the 33-year-old rookie boss is a bold next step that might well pay off for the Baggies, but he will have his work cut out for him from the get-go, with the likes of Grady Diangana, who had been a part of the furniture at the Hawthorns for some time, now heading out the exit door.

After those high-profile departures soured the mood somewhat, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur coach has been backed, notably with Aune Heggebo leaving Brann behind for a fee around the £4.7m mark to join the Championship side.

The additions up top might not grind to a halt here, however, despite the Nordic striker’s lavish fee, as more attacking signings look to be prioritised.

West Brom's next moves in the market

Diangana isn’t the only notable name in attack that could desert the Hawthorns, with Mikey Johnston still likely despondent after a £5m move to Flamengo fell through at the last minute.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Spurs youngster Mikey Moore might well be on the West Brom shopping list to bolster down this depleted left-hand side, therefore, but Heggebo could also have competition up top very shortly if the West Midlands outfit power on to snap up an EFL-experienced striker for free.

Indeed, a new report by the Sheffield Star has revealed that Rhian Brewster is unlikely to pen a new contract at his current employers Sheffield United, which will open the door for a suitor to snap up the ex-Liverpool forward for nothing.

The Star further indicates that Sunderland are looking at the hit-and-miss Blades striker, but a report by SportsBoom right at the start of July also suggested that the Baggies were keen on a move for the free agent.

This interest might well accelerate back into motion now this exclusive development has come to light, with West Brom perhaps eager to work their Josh Maja magic again on the former Blades number seven in unearthing a goalscoring diamond in the rough.

How West Brom can work their Maja magic on Brewster

Before transforming into West Brom’s number one option in attack, Maja had been through the wringer during his often bumpy playing days.

The one-time Nigeria international would initially come onto the radar of English football fans when rising the ranks at Sunderland, with Maja powering home a promising seven strikes from 29 Sunderland U23 appearances, before taking it up a notch even further when finding the back of the net 17 times in the senior picture.

However, everything started to unravel when he left the comforts of the Stadium of Light behind, with his spell at Bordeaux ridden with injuries, whilst then struggling to find his feet back on English soil with the likes of Stoke City and Fulham.

West Brom have managed to get the best out of the unfortunate 26-year-old again, with an impressive return of 12 strikes coming his way last season in Championship action, but he is still prone to an extended stay in the treatment room.

Brewster has an eerily similar story to Maja’s, considering the 25-year-old once had the world at his feet when leading the line for Liverpool in the U23 scene, before finding the men’s game to be a cruel beast.

He has since found his way back on the horse despite an injury-plagued few seasons in South Yorkshire, with a promising seven goal contributions coming his way last season, which led to his then-Blades boss Chris Wilder heralding him as “amazing” for his perseverance.

He might well be Mason’s very own Maja-like project if a move is sealed, with the London-born forward amazingly ahead of his Nigerian counterpart in terms of second-tier strikes bagged, as seen in his 18 strikes and counting, next to Maja’s 15.

With Brewster missing only seven clashes last campaign through injury, the hope will be that he can kick on and reclaim his former Reds magic – which saw him net a blistering 13 U23 goals at Anfield – only this time around it could secure a promotion in the senior game.

West Brom could land the dream Johnston replacement in "future superstar"

If Mikey Johnston does end up finalising a move away from West Bromwich Albion, this rising star could be a perfect replacement.

Leaning, Evison, Denly dig in to ensure Kent go down with pride

Stalemate ensues at Chester-le-Street after lengthy rain delays

ECB Reporters Network29-Sep-2024Kent 353 for 8 dec (Leaning 84, Evison 77, Denly 63) drew with Durham 360 (Lees 144, Bedingham 66, Parkinson 6-109)Excellent knocks from Jack Leaning, Joe Denly and Joey Evison steered already-relegated Kent to a creditable draw in their rain-affected Vitality County Championship clash at Durham.Leaning and Denly led a good Kent batting performance, something that has been all too rare this season, and secured a draw on day four at the Seat Unique Riverside with some good batting with the tail from Evison.Leaning and Denly came together after an early wicket for the hosts and combined for a partnership worth 124, with Kent finishing on 353 for eight as the captain’s shook hands at 4:20pm.The draw gives Kent a good end to a disappointing season, with the county finishing bottom of Division One and as a result they will be playing in Division Two in 2025, where they will be targeting an instant return to the top tier.Meanwhile for Durham, they have secured a mid-table finish in their first Division One season for eight years and there’s plenty of positives for the North East county to take from their first season back amongst the elite, most notably the emergence of youngsters Ben McKinney, James Minto and Daniel Hogg. They will look to close the gap to the top of the table next season, with Will Rhodes, Sam Conners and Emilio Gay all joining permanently for the next campaign. In addition to that, depending on the schedule in 2025, they could also have England Test skipper Ben Stokes to call upon, he was spotted continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury at Chester-le-Street as he targets a return from injury for the Pakistan Test series.Kent resumed on 96 for three after an eventful third day at Chester-le-Street, with skipper Leaning and nightwatchman Jas Singh at the crease.Singh did his job and didn’t last long with him feathering a Bas de Leede ball down the legside to Ollie Robinson in the second over of the day.Leaning played a lovely straight drive from the bowling of de Leede to get himself going on day four.Denly looked in good touch and played a lovely cut shot on the offside for four as the former England man halted the hosts’ push for wickets along with his captain.Leaning then reached his fifty from 108 balls to give the already-relegated visitors some hope of picking up a creditable draw in the North East.At the other end Denly continued to find the boundary, with the experienced right-hander whipping a Chemar Holder delivery through mid-wicket for four.Durham had a chance to get Denly out as he played an aerial shot off the bowling of Minto, but Callum Parkinson dropped it at fine leg. It was a drop that the hosts would later regret as Denly reached his half-century, which came from 82 balls and included five fours. The visitors reached lunch without further loss and Leaning hit the first ball after the break through mid-wicket for four.Parkinson then dropped Denly again after he failed to take a tricky return catch off his own bowling. However, it was third time lucky for the left-arm spinner as he got Denly caught and bowled for 63.Leaning then quickly followed him into the pavilion for an excellent 84 after he pulled a de Leede delivery straight to Minto on the legside boundary.Evison came to the crease and swung some momentum back to the visitors, with the all-rounder carving a Hogg delivery to the offside boundary and he then pummelled a Parkinson ball down the ground for six.Marcus O’Riordan then departed after he edged a Hogg delivery to Colin Ackermann at slip for three.Evison continued to motor alongside Grant Stewart as they took Kent past the follow-on target, but Stewart departed for 40 just after tea, handing Holder his first wicket of the match.Evison reached his fifty from 67 balls and saw out the draw for the visitors alongside Matt Parkinson.

Better than Diarra: Sunderland racing PL clubs to sign £9m "genius"

It’s nearly a month now until Sunderland kick their Premier League season off on home turf versus West Ham United as the Black Cats’ transfer business continues at a hundred miles per hour.

Six new faces have joined the ever-expanding Stadium of Light ranks so far, with the pick of the recent bunch who have relocated to Wearside being Simon Adingra, as the Premier League-capable attacker left Brighton and Hove Albion behind for a fresh adventure up North.

Don’t be surprised if the number of exciting bodies to join the building rises into the double-digit range very soon, with more and more high-profile signings expected to be made before August arrives.

£9m star now on the Sunderland shopping list

Whilst the cash thrown around to land Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra and Chemsdine Talbi would have caught the eye of those with connections to Sunderland, as £67m was excessively splashed, the pick up of Adingra will be the most pleasing capture to date, considering his wide knowledge of the top-flight.

Aaron Ramsdale might well add to that if he joins Regis Le Bris’ camp very soon, with new rumours seeming to suggest that the goalkeeper might be the new number one the Black Cats desire when climbing back up to the Premier League.

Salvatore Esposito for Italy vs England.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has even been allegedly on the Sunderland shopping list as well. However, the European markets will no doubt still be tapped into again as Le Bris and Co now enter the race to try and snap up Spezia gem Salvatore Esposito.

As per a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, the one-time Italy international is firmly on Sunderland’s summer radar, with the likes of Brighton, Burnley, Brentford, Everton, and Fulham all also interested in the 24-year-old after Spezia failed to win promotion to Serie A.

Valued at just £9m – as per Transfermarkt – this could well prove to be a great steal on the end of Sunderland if Esposito instantly acclimatises to the demands of the English game and shines, with the Spezia number five perhaps going to be an even better talent than the £30m-rated Diarra down the line.

How Esposito could be even better than Diarra

Of course, Diarra does have plenty of top-flight experience under his belt that will help him when trying to become an instant success on Wearside.

Indeed, the 21-year-old had amassed 94 Ligue 1 appearances for Strasbourg with a hefty tally of nine goals and ten assists also coming his way lining up for Liam Rosenior’s side.

Yet, it’s very clear when looking at the above table – even if Esposito has played the majority of his career in the Italian second tier to date – that the 24-year-old definitely has a higher ceiling than the Serie B, with a ridiculous 17 goal contributions next to his name from 34 league clashes last season.

The most exciting takeaway from the table, however, will be how well-rounded Esposito’s game looks as a midfielder who is capable of dazzling crowds with that output, but he is also a talent hungry to battle away for his team’s cause, as seen in his mammoth 7.3 duels being won per game last campaign as Spezia gunned for promotion.

Diarra’s numbers do fall flat in comparison, with the former Inter Milan man even going on to win that solitary Italy call-up when he was known as a rising gem.

Therefore, the “elegant” midfielder – as he’s been lauded in the past by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – should be able to make the first-team cut under Le Bris very soon, even if the jump up in quality is disorientating at first.

Diarra could well find that transition to be even trickier, considering he has that lavish £30m price tag above his head.

Whereas, for only £9m, Esposito – who has also been labelled as a “technical genius” by football analyst Ben Mattinson – won’t have that same level of anxiety on his shoulders, with the 24-year-old hopeful he can be an immediate success story that helps Sunderland to survive.

On the back of Dalal’s brilliant quadruple hundred, Haryana declared on 742 for 8 early on the third morning.Dalal, who scored 4 against Madhya Pradesh, and 23 and 67 against Jharkhand in the last two matches, was sent to open in the match against Mumbai and shared a 410-run partnership for the first wicket with Arsh Ranga. Chelsea make contact to sign "aggressive" £17m ace; they've had a response

With a deal already edging closer to signing Jorrel Hato from Ajax, Chelsea have also now reportedly made their first contact to sign a fresh attacking reinforcement.

Chelsea closing in on Hato

As ever, Chelsea have welcomed several fresh faces this summer. As Enzo Maresca gears up for his second season in charge, he now has the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens at his disposal in what remains a squad filled to the brim with quality in depth.

The Blues haven’t quite wrapped up their summer business just yet, however. After showing the door to Noni Madueke, who joined London rivals Arsenal, and Saudi-bound Joao Felix, those at Stamford Bridge still have money to spend and have turned towards Hato as a result.

The 19-year-old left-back now looks destined to become the latest young talent to arrive in West London, as Chelsea continue to build one of the youngest squads in the Premier League.

Hato’s tender age is unlikely to stand in the way of first-team opportunities, though. The Dutchman already has plenty of experience on that front and even graced the Europa League for Ajax last season.

One of many to have praised Hato, Statman Dave recently told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Big Transfer Talk: “When you look at his stats over the season, we are starting to see a player who is very composed and creative. He could potentially go on a similar path to Trent Alexander-Arnold – that is the player I would liken him to in Europe.”

Better signing than Simons: Chelsea poised to bid for "electric" £40m star

With Xavi Simons set to sign for Chelsea, are the Blues about to bring in an even better attacker from a PL rival described as “electric”?

ByBen Gray Jul 30, 2025

Alas, it’s not just their backline that Chelsea still want to improve. The Blues have also reportedly made their first move to sign a Serie A star.

Chelsea make first approach to sign Weah

According to SpazioJ, Chelsea have made their first approach to sign Timothy Weah from Juventus, only for the American to turn down a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

It’s not the first time that the winger has turned down the chance to join a Premier League club, either. Earlier this summer, reports emerged that he had handed Nottingham Forest the same answer that he has now given Chelsea and Tottenham. Just where his future now lies as a result is the big question.

Juventus are still willing to sell Weah for around €20m (£17m) ahead of next season, but it remains to be seen whether the likes of Chelsea come calling with a second attempt to convince the 25-year-old.

After scoring six goals and providing five assists in all competitions last season, former Juventus boss Thiago Motta took the chance to praise Weah – telling reporters: “I see him very well, the first thing for a full-back is to defend, be aggressive, win duels, and he is winning a lot of them. He is aggressive, he can still improve, I am very happy with what I see, and on top of that, he also manages to score goals.”

Knight and Bates give Thunder derby victory over Sixers

Ash Gardner threatened to revive the chase for Sixers but couldn’t get the side home

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2024Key performances from in-form duo Heather Knight and Samantha Bates earned Sydney Thunder the first derby bragging rights of the season over Sydney Sixers with an 18-run win at the SCG.Knight’s fluent 50 off 31 balls, a continuation of the impact she has had this season, led Thunder to a total that appeared around par on a good batting surface and a strong Thunder attack defended it expertly. The result kept Thunder top of the table and strongly placed to push for a home grand final with five games remaining.Sixers fell to 63 for 5 in the 10th over but Ash Gardner was keeping them in the contest with a timely return to form after her previous four innings in the tournament had brought 24 runs. But with 28 needed off 14 balls she was deceived through the air as she advanced at Bates and with her went the home side’s hopes.Bates took her wicket tally to 11 from the last three games and was back at the top of the season charts ahead of Alana King. Shabnim Ismail, despite being wicketless, also played a key role as she conceded just five an over and was also superb in the outfield with four catches on a blustery afternoon. With the bat, Chamari Athapaththu, well supported in the crowd by a strong Sri Lanka presence, helped lay a solid base and the acceleration came in the second half of the innings from Knight and Phoebe Litchfield. The pair took 30 without loss off the two power surge overs and though they couldn’t stay to close things out Thunder had enough.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs London City Lionesses: Olivia Smith looks worth every penny – Gunners' summer signing enjoys dream debut as England heroes Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Beth Mead play key roles in opening-day WSL win

The Canada international showed just why the north London side forked out £1 million for her services this summer with an outstanding Emirates bow

For a while on Saturday, London City Lionesses looked like they were about to make the sort of statement they'd have dreamed of when the Women's Super League fixtures were announced back in July. The newly-promoted side have not been shy about their ambitions for this year, setting a new world-record for a transfer fee in the women's game just two days ago, and the reasons for that internal belief were shown to the outside world when they went 1-0 up away at Arsenal, at the Emirates Stadium, in their first-ever game in the top-flight.

The Gunners, though, made their own splash in this summer's transfer window, and it was fitting, really, that it was the electricity of Olivia Smith who sparked them into life in a 4-1 comeback win.

Arsenal made Smith the first million-pound women's player back in July and she showed her new fans that she was more than fitting of such a fee here, producing a sublime solo strike to get the Gunners back on level terms midway through the first half. Renee Slegers' side had started surprisingly slowly and London City took early advantage, with Katie Reid's foul on Kosovare Asllani allowing them to go ahead from the penalty spot. However, the game changed completely once Smith found the back of the net.

From there, Arsenal looked more like Arsenal. Chances came for Smith, Victoria Pelova, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo before the latter teed up Kelly on the stroke of half-time for what was a deserved goal.

While the Gunners were unable to add to their lead, there would still be precarious moments, with Daphne van Domselaar sure to have had her heart in her mouth as Rofiat Imuran's cross drifted over her head and hit the woodwork. But Arsenal deserved to win and that they did, with Stina Blackstenius and Frida Maanum both scoring from the bench to ensure they started the new season with three points as they look to really challenge a dominant Chelsea for the title this time around.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Daphne van Domselaar (6/10):

Had very little to do in terms of saves. Commanded her area well, though.

    Emily Fox (7/10):

Caused problems when she drifted into central areas, able to pick out passes that put the opponent on the back foot, and was solid at the back despite Imuran looking lively down London City's left.

    Katie Reid (7/10):

A shame she gave away the penalty with a rash challenge because there was so much to like about her performance away from that. Showed what a good defender she is otherwise in a surprise start.

    Steph Catley (7/10):

A solid performance in which she did very little wrong. Great on the ball, as per.

    Katie McCabe (6/10):

Surprisingly quiet in an attacking sense but honoured her defensive duties well.

    Midfield

    Kim Little (7/10):

Oozed class all afternoon, showing her wonderful intelligence in possession in particular.

    Mariona Caldentey (6/10):

Couldn't really make her mark on the game, which was a surprise given how outstanding she has been over the last 12 months.

    Victoria Pelova (6/10):

Made good runs and picked up good positions as she continues to work her way back to her best after an ACL injury. Unlucky not to score when she watched Kumagai clear her effort off the line.

    Attack

    Olivia Smith (8/10):

Arsenal's liveliest player throughout. Scored a special equaliser and always looked capable of making something else like that happen when she picked up the ball.

    Alessia Russo (8/10):

Lacked service herself but created so much for others, showcasing that side of her game brilliantly in a fantastic display.

    Chloe Kelly (7/10):

Grew into the game and had a few looks at goal as she did, eventually getting on the scoresheet to put Arsenal ahead.

    Subs & Manager

    Frida Maanum (6/10):

Wrapped things up late on with an opportunistic header, despite struggling to get really involved until that point.

    Caitlin Foord (6/10):

Had a tough act to follow in replacing Smith but brought plenty of energy to the pitch and caused all sorts of problems down the left.

    Beth Mead (7/10):

Didn't have long to make an impact but she sure did, providing two late assists as Arsenal wrapped up victory.

    Stina Blackstenius (6/10):

Showcased her poaching instincts with her finish just six minutes after entering the game.

    Taylor Hinds (N/A):

Replaced McCabe in the final minutes for her second debut at the club, having returned on a free transfer earlier this summer.

    Renee Slegers (7/10):

Made a big call in starting Reid ahead of Wubben-Moy but, despite the penalty incident, it paid off, as the teenager was solid as a rock. Substitutions ensured her team kept their foot on the gas and made it the comfortable win they deserved.

Revealed: What Liverpool won’t do after receiving Federico Chiesa transfer call – with Italian forward left out of Reds’ Champions League squad

Besiktas have reportedly approached Liverpool over a move for Federico Chiesa after the winger was left out of the Reds' Champions League squad.

Chiesa left out of Liverpool's UCL squadEuropean side interested in wingerReds not entertaining departureFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool named their 22-man squad for the league phase of the Champions League last week – and Chiesa was not in it. Subsequently, the Turkish side have enquired about a loan deal for the Italian but Fabrizio Romano claims the ex-Juventus man is going nowhere.

AdvertisementWHAT ROMANO SAID

He said on his YouTube channel, "Besiktas, in the last 24 to 48 hours, tried to call for Federico Chiesa to understand the situation at Liverpool. What I can tell you is that Liverpool are not letting Federico go on loan. At the moment, negotiations are not advanced. It's not something really concrete or advanced, but they made a call also for Federico Chiesa."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite scoring in Liverpool's win over Bournemouth and coming off the bench against Newcastle United in their opening Premier League games of the season, Chiesa did not make the cut for Arne Slot's Champions League squad. He was repeatedly linked with an Anfield exit this summer but stayed put ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Omissions like this may mean that was the wrong decision.

The 27-year-old will hope he can get some more Liverpool game time, and eventually win over Slot, when they travel to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday. Incidentally, the Turkish transfer window shuts on September 12, so Besiktas still have time to sign a new winger.
