Southampton must revisit talks to cash in on underwhelming Jannik Vestergaard

Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard has shed light on his transfer situation over the last 12 months. The Denmark international admitted that a move was on his mind earlier this year, but he ultimately decided to stay at the request of Ralph Hasenhuttl and the club.

Speaking to Goal.com, Vestergaard mentioned the fact that even in the summer, clubs had come knocking for his services. However, since being convinced to stay, his focus is only on Southampton and he has not received any information on interested parties from his agent.

Whilst his loyalty to the club is admirable, the Saints should look to reevaluate their decision. Is the 28-year-old a player Southampton are reliant on?

Hasenhuttl made a mistake with Verstergaard talks

It’s certainly an odd decision to keep Vestergaard at the club following his quiet 2019/20 season. The Dane was dropped for 17 Premier League matches and missed a further two due to picking up a knock (via Transfermarkt). This hints that Hasenhuttl had no real desire to deploy the defender, especially having four players in the same position fighting for their role in the squad.

When Vestergaard has been on the pitch, he’s been subject to a lot of criticism. Lots of Southampton fans have ridiculed his performances and even club icon Matt Le Tissier has given him both barrels. Speaking to Sky Sports (via HITC), the pundit slammed the Saints man for not doing enough to mark his man.

“It’s a really odd habit to get into,” Le Tissier said following Southampton’s loss to West Ham last year.

But Vestergaard hasn’t just been disappointing for his club, his international displays have also left a lot to be desired. Denmark’s most recent match against England saw him play just 16 minutes, with the previous fixture leaving him reduced to the bench (via Sofascore).

Leicester were reported to be linked to Southampton’s controversial man, but a move didn’t materialise. Hasenhuttl should look to strike up talks against once the January window comes round, in hopes to cash in on the man slowly being phased out of the team.

Colchester Community Stadium

Key Information about Colchester Community Stadium

Colchester Community Stadium is one of the newest grounds in the Football League – it was opened for League Two side Colchester United in August 2008 after construction began the previous year.

The Essex located stadium has an all-seater capacity of 10,105, and it is currently known as the JobServe Community Stadium for sponsorship reasons.

Colchester Community Stadium is split into four stands; simply known as North, South, East, and West Stands.

A history of Colchester Community Stadium

Prior to the construction of Colchester Community Stadium, Colchester United previously had played their home games at Layer Road since 1937; however, since 1970 the club had been trying to find a new home as it was announced that Layer Road required almost £300,000 of basic improvements to meet safety requirements at the time. A new site was finally chosen in the 1990s, and plans were submitted in April 1999 to construct on a 30-acre site.

It was not until 13 November 2006, that Colchester United’s chief executive Marie Partner announced to fans that they had received the green light to begin construction on the Colchester Community Stadium. Plans also included approval to build 1,500 homes, a police station and a primary school which ties in with the club’s community morals. Work commenced on the Cuckoo Farm site in the summer of 2007, and as a consequence of owing to a deal with building firm Weston Homes, the ground was to be re-named as the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The sponsorship deal was confirmed for ten years, and it was worth up to £2m, including shirt sponsorship for their inaugural season as a partner.

The first match to be played at the Colchester Community Stadium was a friendly between Colchester and LaLiga side Athletic Bilbao on 4 August 2008 – a game which finished 2-1 to the Spanish side. Over the years, Colchester Community Stadium has hosted many England U21/Women games, including a debut for full England international Marcus Rashford as he notably scored a hat-trick against Norway in 2016. The highest record attendance at the Colchester Community Stadium was set on 16 January 2010 as Colchester hosted Norwich City. An almost sell-out crowd of 10,064 witnessed the U’s suffer a 5-0 defeat by the Canaries.

Everton news: Darren Bent tips Wilfried Zaha to join the Toffees

The transfer saga of Wilfried Zaha and his potential move away from Crystal Palace has been one of the biggest stories in recent years. Of course, it was never going to break records or write history but the Ivory Coast forward has managed to turn a lot of heads when he was suddenly available on the market.

But he ended up staying at Palace and slowly but surely, the story died down a little bit. Now, however, a couple of seasons into the future, he might be set for a move once again. Darren Bent spoke exclusively to Football Insider and talked about how it is time for the 17-cap superstar to make a step up in his career. The destination? Everton.

Here’s what he said for Football Insider: “I know you might look at where they are in the league but I’d say it’s a step up in regards, they have a top manager, he’s going to attract top players. I like what they’re doing down there, they’re building something quite special, so it would be nice for Zaha to go there and transform them to where they feel they should be.

“I really like it, it suits him well and he’d do well going there. It’s about going to the best fit for him and if he goes to Everton he’d get a lot of game time and he’d go well.”

Of course, this would not be the first time Carlo Ancelotti’s side tried to snatch him up. Palace had rejected £70m plus James McCarthy and Cenk Tosun last summer and stated their star is worth £80m.

It is not known how much would the Eagles ask for now but it would definitely be a formidable amount either way.

Zaha has played a total of 362 games in all competitions for the club since his arrival and has managed to net 57 goals in that time as well. For that reason, he would not go for cheap.

Verdict

If Ancelotti is really to strengthen his team for the upcoming 2020/21 Premier League season, he will have to add quality firepower to the Toffees’ ranks. Zaha certainly falls under that category.

However, his availability is questionable. Palace would probably be open to selling but it still might cost an arm and a leg.

Newcastle United: Journalist says Premier League should act on takeover

A journalist for The Northern Echo has pleaded to the Premier League to act fast on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United by claiming that it is ‘no longer an excuse not to act’ as the English top flight have been relatively silent on the prospective deal until now.

As per the writer, the patience of some members of the Toon faithful have been stretched to the limit as the £300 million agreement between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-led group has seen delay after a delay over the last few weeks that the saga has dragged on for.

He even goes as far to say that it is a ‘farce’ as the release of the owner’s and director’s tests (OTD) set out by England’s highest division was 12 weeks ago now and it is still unclear as to whether the would-be owners would pass the checks.

The journalist also claims that the league are ‘terrified of making a decision’, as they have to carefully consider all of the factors that have been thrown at them with regards to piracy and human rights issues in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), to which their crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and his Public Investment Fund (PIF) are heading the bid.

The Premier League have arguably been preoccupied with the restart of the top flight following the games between Aston Villa and Sheffield United and Manchester City versus Arsenal, but the writer argues that it is time to make a decision on the takeover now.

However, NUFC supporters will be made to wait just that little bit longer until this decision is made whilst the league concentrates on making the season run smoothly until the end.

Geordies, is it time for the Premier League to make a decision? Comment below!

Profit Players: Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of Dele Alli proved to be an absolute stroke of genius

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Tanguy Ndombele’s future at Tottenham Hotspur hangs in the balance, while several of his teammates are set to leave the club in the summer.

Jose Mourinho is acutely aware that he will be hampered by a tight budget in the transfer market, which means he will have to offload players to fund new signings, focusing on free agents and swap deals to revamp his squad.

However, fans should be reassured that Dele Alli is one player who won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Ever since he arrived at White Hart Lane from MK Dons in February 2015, Alli has established himself as a firm favourite with the Tottenham fan base.

Alli moved to north London from Milton Keynes for £5m and was loaned back to the Dons for the rest of the 2014/15 season as part of the deal. The midfielder, who was also wanted by Newcastle United at the time, scored 16 goals in 39 games in the Championship for Karl Robinson’s side.

He picked up the Young Player of the Year award at the Football League Awards which arguably set the tone for the rest of his career. A year later, he beat his teammate Harry Kane to the PFA Young Player of the Year trophy for the 2015-16 season.

Despite the fact he wasn’t expected to immediately break into the first team, Alli netted 10 goals in 33 appearances in his first full season in the Premier League. He scored his first league goal for Spurs in only his second game, coming off the bench to head home the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

His heroics on the pitch didn’t go unnoticed as he was soon called up for international duty. He started for England for the first time in November 2015, scoring against his clubmate Hugo Lloris in the 2-0 victory over France.

Perhaps aware of lingering interest from some of the club’s closest rivals, Daniel Levy convinced Alli to sign a new deal, keeping him at the club until at least 2021. Signing the extension spurred him on to even greater heights as he subsequently agreed to sign another contract, which extended his stay at Spurs for another year.

He bettered his tally of the previous season by scoring 18 goals in 37 league games in 2016/17, although the Lilywhites missed out on the Premier League title.

During Mauricio Pochettino’s final full season in charge, Alli only scored five times in the three assists as Spurs mounted a surprising charge towards the final in Madrid.

The Englishman picked up two assists and Lucas Moura bagged a last-minute winner to round off a resounding comeback against Ajax in the second leg of the semi-final. Although Alli and his team-mates ultimately fell short in their attempts to lift the coveted trophy, that Spurs came so close bodes well for the future.

It is fair to say that the England international has achieved so much in such a short amount of time, as it is worth remembering that he is still only 24 years old.

He struggled with a hamstring injury at the start of the season and he missed two games as a result. Nevertheless, Alli is the club’s third-highest goalscorer this term, just behind Kane and Son Heung-min, as he has scored nine goals in all competitions so far.

Evidently, all of his hard work has certainly paid off, as his valuation has risen sharply ever since he arrived at White Hart Lane. Starting at a mere £4.5m in July 2015, his market value has skyrocketed to £72m by March 2020. He is currently valued at £57m via Transfermarkt, but this slightly reduced figure is likely a consequence of the coronavirus crisis.

As Alli is still only young, his valuation will no doubt increase if Spurs can reach the lofty heights of some of their fiercest rivals. Nevertheless, signing him for just £5m was a stroke of genius by Daniel Levy, as he has been rewarded with three consecutive top three finishes and a historic Champions League final appearance.

The midfielder has had a stellar career at Tottenham so far and there could be plenty more to come from him.

Tottenham fans, do you think Dele Alli has been an absolute bargain? Let us know in the comments below!

Jose Enrique names Jordan Henderson as player of the season

Jose Enrique makes no secret of his love for Liverpool Football Club on social media.

The former Reds left-back regularly comments on the Premier League leaders through his Instagram account, and he used the platform to express his opinion once again over the course of the weekend.

Jordan Henderson has been one of the most divisive figures at the club since he arrived from Sunderland in 2011, but he has firmly silenced his doubters in the last two campaigns.

A beating heart of energy and dynamism in central midfield, Liverpool were not the same beast during his recent absence through injury, though his return could not prevent them from being dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

Amid his rise in stature, plenty of pundits have weighed in with their thoughts and Jamie Carragher recently delivered his verdict in an article published by The Telegraph.

“I have to say I am delighted but a little baffled that Jordan Henderson is getting more praise this season than in previous years.

“I think that probably says more about those suggesting he has massively improved rather than the player himself because – as I am sure Jurgen Klopp will testify – his consistent excellence as captain has been fundamental to Liverpool’s return to the top.”

In response to those comments, Enrique suggested Carragher was spot on and named Henderson as his player of the season.

The season may not yet have reached its conclusion and doubts persist over when and if it will be concluded.

However, regardless of what happens to the 2019/20 campaign, there is little doubt that Henderson is a stark candidate for the player of the season award.

Alasdair Gold says Mourinho could transform Gedson Fernandes

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed Jose Mourinho could help transform Gedson Fernandes at Tottenham.

What did he say?

The midfielder arrived on an initial 18-month loan from Benfica in the January transfer window, but has struggled to really make an impression in north London since joining – Fernandes has made just four appearances in the Premier League, worth only 40 minutes in total.

Despite that, Gold has insisted the Portuguese ace has some of the raw attributes and qualities that Mourinho could help develop at Spurs, and could see him become a real force in the engine room.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “The Tottenham boss knows his compatriot well. Gedson is very much a raw but gifted talent, one who needs plenty of work and development but has a high ceiling to what he can achieve. On the whole Mourinho utilised Gedson’s pace, drive and trickery late in games and often his impact from the bench was felt. What comes next with Gedson will be borne from that relationship with the head coach.

“Gedson’s versatility, or lack of a defined position yet, means Mourinho could turn him into the next Moussa Sissoko, the legs in the midfield but with more ability to thread a pass through to the attackers or arrive in the opposition box himself to finish off a move. What will benefit Tottenham is that essentially Gedson is undergoing one long 18-month trial.

“That means that during a time when finances are tight, Tottenham are getting a talented young player cheaply on loan but with the drive to earn himself a permanent move. Gedson may well be forgotten by the fans amid the excitement of the next transfer window but if Mourinho can find the key to the young Portuguese’s future then he could have a big role to play at Tottenham next season.”

Opportunity

As Gold points out, the fact Fernandes is on an 18-month loan, means Spurs are in no real rush to make a big decision on whether they commit to signing the Portuguese starlet permanently.

Mourinho can slowly blood him into the side, and depending on what his team’s needs are, could mould him into box-to-box type player, or even someone playing far more advanced.

Picking him up in January was a stroke of genius from the north Londoners, and it’s very much a low-risk, high-reward move.

Spurs striker Kane may have to kiss Golden Boot goodbye

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Harry Kane will not have appreciated being overshadowed in the last two Golden Boot races.

Mohamed Salah won the award in 2017/18, scoring 32 goals in 36 appearances, and then shared it the following season with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane after hitting the net on 22 occasions.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker had won the award for the previous two seasons running and he will surely be champing at the bit to get his hands on the individual gong once again.

With the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino, though, one has to wonder how the England captain will fare as he looks to hit the top of the scoring charts once again.

Indeed, the Portuguese has managed some of the very best strikers in world football, from Didier Drogba to Diego Milito and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Cristiano Ronaldo.

But a statistical quirk suggests that Kane may struggle to get back to his award-winning self under the ex-Inter Milan boss.

Indeed, only two players since Mourinho’s appointment as Chelsea boss for the first time have scored over 22 goals in a single season: Ronaldo, naturally, and Ibrahimovic.

Ronaldo did it three times and even hit 46 in La Liga in 2011/12, in just 38 games. That, quite simply, is freakishly good.

[ad_pod ]

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, hit 25 in Serie A back in 08/09 but, strangely, none of Mourinho’s strikers have managed the feat in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku scored 16 at Manchester United in 2017/18, Ibrahimovic scored 17 for the Red Devils in 16/17, Diego Costa scored 20 for Chelsea in 14/15 and Drogba only ever scored 20 in the league too, in 06/07.

Kane, of course, already has six goals to his name this season but the stats suggest he will have to work hard to hit the back of the net with regularity under Mourinho.

Indeed, even the likes of Eden Hazard, at Chelsea, topped out at 14 while Frank Lampard, the archetypal goalscoring midfielder, never scored more than 16 in the league for the new Spurs boss.

Jamie Vardy currently leads the scoring charts with 11 goals in 12 games and a strike rate of 0.91. Extrapolated, if he continues on his current form, his strike rate over 38 games would see him net 35 goals in total.

If Kane is going to reach those levels, he will have to be Mourinho’s best forward since Ronaldo.

Good luck, Harry.

Tottenham fans drool over Dean Henderson transfer link

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left drooling after Ricky Sacks relayed a Football London report saying Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson could be an option for Spurs this summer.

The Football London story was talking about the Hugo Lloris dilemma manager Jose Mourinho has ahead of the summer transfer window, given he is beginning to make more and more errors.

The report brought up Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana who has already been linked with a move to north London, before it went on to say that Henderson and Burnley stopper Nick Pope could be potential options nearer to home.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Indeed, the former’s future at Old Trafford may well be up in the air at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old is currently enjoying a second successful loan spell with Sheffield United in the Premier League, but the Blades have no option to buy with the goalkeeper signing a new contract with the Red Devils before moving to Bramall Lane on a temporary basis last summer.

The potential issue is whether the 6 foot 2 goalkeeper would be willing to sit on the bench for his parent club, with David De Gea surely unlikely to relinquish his number one spot anytime soon.

Should he be promised first-team football by Spurs and Mourinho for example, he and United may well be left with a decision to make.

Spurs supporters on Twitter certainly seem thrilled by the link to the 6 foot 2 star, although some aren’t sure whether they could actually sign him.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is really important to Liverpool says Pepijn Lijnders

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could have a very important role for Liverpool this season, if the words of Pepijn Lijnders are to be believed.

What did he say?

The Reds’ midfielder has made a steady comeback from his ACL injury which he sustained in April 2018, but he has already shown glimpses of the form he was in shortly before his injury.

His importance for Klopp was growing with key goals against Manchester City in both the league and the Champions League, and he also managed eight assists – something the German is lacking from his current midfield three, with a combined total of two assists managed by Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been given a chance to start on occasion this term, but really impressed against Genk last week with two goals, the second of which was top drawer, and Lijnders acknowledged that the attacking aspect to his play offers the team something different.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

As reported by the Mirror, he said: “Ox of course is a very sad story, with the injury I mean.

“But everyone knows he was very important for us just before the injury – he is really important for us because he gives a completely different dynamic to create.

“We want to give him time and we know it will come if he keeps his aggression offensively and defensively. We saw already glimpses, we saw already really good phases and he said it himself already he wants to do it now (consistently) – that will be the next step.”

His comments suggest the 26-year-old will get his chance to impress at some point, and if he continues his goalscoring form then the likes of Wijnaldum and Henderson could find their place in the starting line-up under significant pressure.

Squad management

Some Liverpool fans are keen to see the former Arsenal man back playing regularly, but Klopp has managed his return very well, and the team is still benefiting from his part-time contribution.

The German has granted him opportunities without making the player exert himself too much, and as a result has mitigated the risk of his injury recurring.

That has allowed him to be fresh for the games he has been selected for, and since the Reds are competing on a number of fronts this term, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s importance cannot be underestimated.

Should he continue to impress in the EFL Cup and the Champions League then he will establish himself in Klopp’s plans, and that means he could prove crucial later in the season.

The Reds lacked depth in their midfield last year, relying on the aforementioned favoured three to start the majority of their games, whilst James Milner has seen his game time reduced since then.

Considering that and the fact that Lijnders is impressed with Oxlade-Chamberlain’s attacking attributes, it is likely he will be significant this term.

His attacking intent could allow him to make a difference from the bench, too. Against Man United his introduction coincided with an increase of the intensity, and it wasn’t surprising when they found the equaliser, with the midfielder almost grabbing the winner also.
