Spurs already eyeing Kessie

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur managing director Fabio Paratici is already eyeing his next transfer swoop as news emerges about AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Paratici era in full swing…

Following the conclusion of Tottenham’s summer transfer window, it’s safe to say that the new Paratici era is now in full swing.

Chairman Daniel Levy appointed the Italian transfer chief at the beginning of June with Paratici going on to oversee a plethora of incomings and outgoings at N17 – as well as the arrival of new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Now, despite the window literally just shutting, it appears that he has his eyes on another swoop for Spurs.

The Latest: News emerges on Kessie…

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are ‘ready to make an offer’ of €8 million(£6.8m)-per-year to Kessie in January in order to sign him as a free agent next summer.

The Ivory Coast international has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro and clubs will be able to make personal January offers to land him for free later in 2022.

Milan are facing a battle to tie him down with a new deal as a result and it appears both Spurs and Paratici are intent on taking full advantage in the winter months.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Lauded as an ‘extraordinary’ player by sports writer and broadcaster Nicky Bandini to ESPN, landing Kessie on a free deal next summer would come as quite the coup given his £49.5 million Transfermarkt value.

The 44-cap star is arguably one of Milan’s most key players and extremely well-rounded – notching 13 goals and four assists despite being a natural defensive midfielder.

Still only 24-years-old and with plenty of sell-on value, it’s little wonder the Serie A giants are desperate to renew Kessie’s deal – but Tottenham and Paratici will be praying for exactly the opposite.

Newcastle players angry at Bruce

A source from Newcastle United has revealed why some players are now ‘angry’ at Steve Bruce.

The Lowdown: Unrest

There has been some unrest around St. James’ Park over the past few days, as The Daily Mail reported a training ground bust-up between Graeme Jones and Dwight Gayle.

As per The Athletic, some people within the North East club ‘weren’t impressed’ by Bruce taking part of the last international break off to go on holiday.

The Latest: Tension rising

According to The Daily Mail, some players reacted with ‘anger’ towards Bruce after he called a meeting on Tuesday, as they felt that his use of running statistics is ‘misguided’.

There is also reportedly a feeling that the training schedule is made to suit Bruce more than the players themselves, as a Tyneside source revealed that they were like: ‘What is he (Bruce) talking about?’

The Verdict: Not ideal

It is certainly not ideal that there appears to be a continuous uproar around the Magpies, and that certainly seems to be translating onto the pitch.

They currently sit in a worrying 19th place in the Premier League table with no wins and just one point from their opening four matches, with Leeds United at home to come (Premier League).

Nonetheless, everything will have to be put to one side for now as the team really need to focus on putting on a performance in front of the Toon Army.

Johnstone could be persuaded to leave WBA

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone could be persuaded to join Tottenham by Harry Kane during the international break, according to Paddy Kenny.

The Lowdown: Johnstone influential for Baggies

The Baggies are mounting a strong promotion push in the Championship so far this season, despite their 1-0 defeat away to Stoke City.

Johnstone has again been a key performer for Valerien Ismael’s side, starting 10 league matches and suffering just one loss overall, proving to be a model of consistency between the sticks.

The Latest: Kenny makes worrying claim

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Spurs, however, and speaking to Football Insider, Kenny claimed Kane could talk him into a switch to north London while on England duty in the next two weeks:

“I reckon he would be a perfect replacement for Lloris.

“Sam has been unreal at West Brom. I thought he was fantastic last season for a team that got relegated.

“He can continue his form now. He is involved with the England setup as well. The Spurs players might have words with him there and try and get it done next week.

“He is from the Man United academy so he has got a brilliant pedigree. So he would be a top signing and a big loss for West Brom.

“He’s a bit older than some of the other options and he has more experience. So I think he would be a bargain.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-6/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Must start until the summer

It is fully understandable why Johnstone would want to be playing for a Premier League club – he is a two-time capped England international, after all – but it is vital that he isn’t sold in January.

If West Brom fail to earn promotion, it would be hard to begrudge the Englishman a summer exit, but leaving midway through the season could be fatal.

Johnstone has shown his loyalty to the Baggies for the time being, so it would be disappointing if a few words from Kane turned his head, in terms of exiting in January.

Crossley: All encouraging stuff coming out of Sheffield Wednesday

Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Mark Crossley believes it’s all encouraging stuff coming out of the club.

The Owls currently sit top of the League One table after an unbeaten start to the league campaign, which has seen Sheffield Wednesday draw their opening game of the season at Charlton Athletic and then follow that up with wins against Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town and Rotherham United.

Manager Darren Moore has been active in the summer transfer window as 13 new players have arrived at the club this summer, but the club have also looked to tie players down to new contracts also.

Josh Windass put pen to paper on a new deal at Hillsborough with the forward staying with the Owls until 2023 and the Star reported that Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sort out a new deal for defender Dominic Iorfa in the coming weeks.

Crossley believes it’s all encouraging news coming out of the club currently, telling Football FanCast: “It helps that the football club’s got 10 points from four games, so Iorfa is obviously going to look at that and think if we can get automatic promotion, which I’m sure that they’ll all be expecting at Sheffield Wednesday this year, then there’s no reason to leave.

“If you can get the likes of Iorfa signing new deals, Josh Windass has put pen to a new contract, it’s all encouraging stuff coming out of Sheffield Wednesday.”

Iorfa has featured in all four of Sheffield Wednesday’s League One matches so far this season and has helped the team to keep four clean sheets in all of those matches.

Pundit disappointed in Harry Kane missing Tottenham training

Carlton Palmer has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Harry Kane should honour his contract at Tottenham amid reports that he missed training on Monday morning.

Following a three-week break since England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro’s final, the Three Lions captain was expected to report back to Spurs’ Hotspur Way training base for the rest of pre-season.

Like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, who won the Copa America with Argentina, Kane had been given extra time off to rest himself ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Man City on Sunday week.

However, according to Sky Sports News, Kane decided against showing up to training, which would suggest that he’s trying to force his way out of the club this summer and join the champions.

Kane currently has three years remaining on the six-year contract he signed back in 2018, but has already told Tottenham he wants to leave, with City, Manchester United and Chelsea all interested in his services.

And Palmer told The Transfer Tavern that he’d be disappointed in Kane’s actions should the rumours of him missing training turn out to be true:

“Well, this is just a rumour that he’s not reported for training. It’s not fact, yet. I don’t know how that’s going to force the issue on how to get the move.

“I don’t believe in players doing that, you should honour your contract. Just because another club makes an offer, that doesn’t give you the right to go on strike or force the move.

“I’d be very disappointed for the captain of England and a leading motor of the Premier League for him to be doing that. It creates a problem for Spurs.”

Spurs: Romano drops Cristian Romero update

Nuno Santo will soon have a new centre-back at Tottenham Hotspur…

What’s the word?

Spurs have edged closer and closer to sealing Cristian Romero in a £47m deal from Atalanta, as per Sky Sports, but in the last few days, news on the situation had gone cold.

However, there is absolutely nothing to worry about, according to renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“To be clear. There’s no problem for Cristian Romero deal: Tottenham have reached an agreement with Atalanta since yesterday. It’s done,” he tweeted.

“Once [Merih] Demiral signs as new Atalanta centre-back (likely tomorrow), Romero will fly to London to complete his Spurs move for €55m.”

Massive coup

This latest update should alleviate any fears that the Lilywhites faithful may have had as they eagerly await the arrival of a much-needed signing.

Romero has to be considered a massive coup for the struggling North London outfit as last season, their defensive issues were perhaps the biggest problem as they finished seventh in the Premier League and were defeated in yet another major final.

Indeed, Spurs leaked more goals than any of the ‘big six’ and are now even one centre-back short, following the departure of Toby Alderweireld to Qatar.

It leaves Nuno with only three senior options, one of which is still very inexperienced, in Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Joe Rodon.

The 23-year-old Argentine bolsters this key position instantly.

He picked up the Serie A’s ‘Defender of the Year’ award for 2020/21 before capping off his outstanding domestic campaign by winning the Copa America with Argentina, alongside current Spurs star Giovani Lo Celso.

Romero averaged the most interceptions per game (3.1) in the whole of the Italian top-flight, whilst further figures of 3.6 aerial duels won, two tackles, and an 86.2% passing accuracy per outing, via WhoScored, suggests he’s an all-round defensive animal.

His performances throughout the year earned high praise indeed. Serie A expert Conor Clancy dubbed the Argentina international “phenomenal” and a “top, top defender” to This is Futbol.

By comparison, only Sanchez managed more tackles (2.2) and Rodon a better passing accuracy (88.1%).

Spurs fans should be absolutely buzzing with the imminent arrival of the £31.5m-rated colossus as it’s one step in the right direction in fixing one of their lingering issues.

Pundit says move to Everton may not be right for Sean Longstaff

Carlton Palmer has warned Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff over joining Everton, worried about the amount of game time he would get over there.

The Toffees and Southampton are interested in signing the midfielder, with Newcastle United slapping a £10million price tag on the 23-year-old.

Longstaff is available for a cut-price fee after entering the final 12 months of his £1,000-per-week contract at St James’ Park.

Benitez, who was appointed as Everton’s new manager in June, is looking to reunite with Longstaff after working with the central midfielder during his stint in charge of the Magpies.

The Spaniard has already linked up with former Newcastle winger Andros Townsend since taking charge at Goodison Park, while Demarai Gray and Asmir Begovic have also sealed switches to Merseyside during the transfer window.

But former Premier League midfielder Palmer believes Longstaff, who has made 71 appearances for Newcastle, may be better off remaining on Tyneside as he would not be a certain starter for Everton.

Palmer exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “He is a talented young player and I do see him going at some point, but I don’t see that happening just yet.

“He would be crazy to leave Newcastle to go to Everton and sit on the bench. He has got to play because, as a young player, that enhances your reputation.”

Wolves transfer update on Neves

Many Wolves fans have been left buzzing as a transfer update emerged on Ruben Neves.

Speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, football journalist and transfer expert Duncan Castles has claimed that the Midlands club value the Portugal international at £50m.

As per talkSPORT, both Manchester United and Arsenal are in the race to sign Neves, whose future is uncertain at Molineux.

Of course, the 24-year-old has been such a key player for the Wanderers over the years, but £50m is a lot of money to turn down for a man who is currently valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt.

Nonetheless, although it would be gutting to let the midfield player go, Bruno Lage could use that sum to then reinvest in other areas of his squad which need strengthening before the new 2021/22 season starts in August.

Gers set for Gilmour windfall

According to The Scottish Sun, Glasgow Rangers are set to receive £1m in add-ons from Billy Gilmour’s departure to Chelsea despite losing out on his loan signing to Norwich City.

The Lowdown: Gilmour closes in on Norwich

The Gers were said to be interested in taking Gilmour back to Ibrox on loan as Chelsea looked for him to spend the next year away from Stamford Bridge to continue his development (The Daily Record).

However, the Scotland international has now completed a move to the Canaries (Official), who were recently promoted to the Premier League.

The Latest: Gers set for windfall

For the Gers, though, there may be a silver lining.

Now, it has been said that Chelsea must pay Rangers £1m in add-ons after the 20-year-old met several targets thanks to his impressive performances for club and country.

A 7-figure fee could of course go a long way to boost Ross Wilson and co’s transfer dealings, with targets like Santos Borre soon to be a free agent so likely seeking a large signing bonus.

The Verdict: Clever

Of course, everyone at Rangers will have been gutted to lose Gilmour in 2017, when he was still just 15 years old. They only picked up £500,000 for selling him, which now looks like a bargain for Chelsea considering Gilmour has developed into a player who already has Premier League, Champions League and European Championships football under his belt.

However, they did at least guarantee they would receive some money should he prove to be a success. £1m could go a long way for the Gers. It remains to be seen whether the 55-time Scottish champions will receive any more funds on the back of Gilmour’s showings in the future.

Elyounoussi return could be bad for Djenepo

Southampton winger Mohamed Elyounoussi has returned to St Mary’s for pre-season training and if he is given opportunities to impress in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side next season, then Moussa Djenepo could well be in trouble.

Will Elyounoussi be given another chance?

It has been suggested that the Norway international will be given a chance to win Hasenhuttl over during pre-season, after spending the last two seasons out on loan with Celtic.

Since signing from FC Basel in 2017, Elyounoussi has managed just 19 appearances for Southampton, in which he managed no goals and no assists, so it was no surprise to see him sent out on loan in order to build some confidence.

It would appear that he has done just that, as in two seasons at Celtic Park, he made 67 appearances, contributing an impressive 24 goals and 14 assists.

Last season saw the 26-year-old managed 17 goals and eight assists in all competitions and it would be a huge boost for Southampton if he were able to replicate that sort of form in the Premier League next season.

BBC journalist Tom English was full of praise for Elyounoussi’s performances during his time at Celtic, as he said:

“Elyounoussi is, I think rightly the Man of the Match, and the one we should talk about because this guy is a very, very good player. When he came to Celtic last season, he might have tailed off towards the end of last season, but he was excellent when he came in.

“He has an awful lot to offer and that performance will fill Neil Lennon with an awful lot of heart because if he’s back to his best, Elyounoussi is a very, very dangerous player.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Bad news for Djenepo?

If Hasenhuttl does unleash Elyounoussi next season, then you worry whether Djenepo will get much game time. He managed just one goal and no assists in 27 Premier League appearances last season, averaging a very disappointing 6.37 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Other than impressive solo goals against Brighton and Sheffield United, the Mali international is yet to really impress with Southampton and has just four strikes to his name in 51 appearances.

Recent reports have linked the 23-year-old with Fenerbahce and if Elyounoussi were to take his chance in Hasenhuttl’s side next season on the left wing, then perhaps we would see Djenepo depart.
