Everton: Maddock drops deadline day update

Everton could be set to bring as many as four players to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by David Maddock, with The Mirror journalist revealing on Twitter that, following Frank Lampard’s appointment as the new Everton manager, Farhad Moshiri could be set to sanction last-minute moves for as many as four of the 43-year-old’s transfer targets on Monday.

In his post, Maddock said: “Some complicated negotiations [are] at [an] advanced stage, [Lampard] will have [the] final decision on at least two, possibly three-four new signings on Monday.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how poor Everton have been this season, with the Toffees sitting a mere four points above the relegation zone at present, it is clear that the current playing squad at Goodison Park is in need of much improvement.

One position that undoubtedly looks as if it could do with improving on is that of centre-back, as although Lampard can call upon the likes of Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite in the heart of his defence, there is no real standout star amongst this quintet – something that will be required if the former Chelsea boss is to improve a Toffees backline that has already shipped 35 goals this season.

Another position in which Lampard is lacking any real strength in depth is attacking midfield, something which has led to the club being linked with late moves for Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek, Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Should the three or four players who Maddock suggests could be on their way to Goodison be in either of these two positions, they will undoubtedly be signings that will have Everton fans buzzing – as, not only would strengthening in the aforementioned areas help to steer the Toffees clear of the drop, they could well be enough to fire the club back to the top half of the Premier League table come May.

Celtic: Pete O’Rourke makes late transfer claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes Celtic could sign a wide forward in the final hours of the January transfer window, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Quiet day

It has been a quiet end to the window so far in terms of incomings, with Michael Nicholson and Ange Postecoglou already completing five signings this month.

Three of those were sorted on New Year’s Eve, with Johnny Kenny and Matt O’Riley also moving to Glasgow on permanent deals.

Osaze Urhoghide has sealed a switch to KV Oostende on deadline day, but O’Rourke thinks the Hoops could have a final surprise up their sleeves.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to GiveMeSport in a story released on Monday afternoon, O’Rourke said that Postecoglou could consider a move for a wide forward.

“I keep hearing how a wide attacker could be in Ange Postecoglou’s thoughts as well if the right option comes up.

“I still think if the right offer or the right players out there, they still might try and bring somebody in just to bolster the squad, especially with their injury problems and if they want to try and catch Rangers and win the Scottish Premiership this season.”

The Verdict: Another Carter-Vickers style deal?

Time is ticking and it looks as if Celtic will end their business on five additions.

However, saying that, they could look to push through a permanent deal for loanee Jota in the final hours if their desire for a wide signing is true.

The Hoops have previous of a late move coming out of nowhere, with Cameron Carter-Vickers’ move in the summer materialising with hours to go and being announced just minutes before midnight.

They have reportedly been working on a full-time transfer since the start of the month for both loanees and have a £6.5m option in the agreement for the Portuguese winger. That could be one to watch, but in terms of fresh faces, the Hoops appear to be done until the summer.

Wolves: Dion Sanderson set for QPR loan

Wolves youngster Dion Sanderson is ‘close’ to sealing a loan move to the Championship until the end of the season, according to reliable journalist Tim Spiers.

The Lowdown: Sanderson not needed at Wolves

The 22-year-old has already been out on loan this season, spending time at Birmingham City and making 14 starts for Lee Bowyer’s side. He was recalled by Wolves earlier this month, and while Bruno Lage may have seen him as a squad option, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

A fresh update suggests that the defender will be making a swift return to the Championship, with a loan move to QPR seemingly in the offing.

The Latest: Sanderson set for QPR loan

Taking to Twitter on Monday afternoon, Spiers confirmed that Sanderson is on the verge of joining QPR, who sit fourth in the table after an impressive season which has seen them pushing for promotion to the top flight

The Athletic journalist outlined: “Dion Sanderson is close to joining promotion-chasing QPR on loan (they’re fourth, two points off second). Told Sheffield United came in with a late loan offer but it’s looking like QPR for the 22-year-old.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move for Sanderson

It makes perfect sense for Sanderson to be loaned out again, rather than struggling for minutes at Wolves and seeing his development stunted. He has been hailed as a ‘Rolls-Royce’ player by Sunderland Lee Johnson during a previous loan spell at the Stadium of Light, highlighting his pedigree whenever he is given a chance at senior level.

The young defender may have a long-term future at Molineux, but for the time being it is hard to see him ousting the likes of Max Kilman, Conor Coady and Romain Saiss from the starting line-up. Indeed, the 22-year-old did not feature in any of Wolves’ three matches since he was recalled from Birmingham, and that was even with Saiss gone to the Africa Cup of Nations.

With QPR pushing for promotion to the Premier League, it would be a great opportunity for Sanderson to test himself in a pressurised situation, looking to make his mark in west London – and indeed on his parent club.

Spurs eye double signing in big update

As per The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is set for major backing by chairman Daniel Levy as the Lilywhites eye a £50 million double swoop before January 31.

The Lowdown: Conte makes transfer demands…

According to reliable reports, Spurs’ head coach has his sights set on improving the squad and has earmarked a list of positions to prioritise – specifically four.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alasdair Gold claims that the Italian wants to reinforce Tottenham with a right-wing-back, left-sided central defender, midfielder and striker if he wishes to transform the club.

The question with Spurs is arguably whether they can afford to grant his wishes, especially since they recently announced total club debts of £706m, but The Sun have just shared some very encouraging news.

The Latest: Conte set for Levy backing…

As per their information, Levy is ‘ready to back’ Conte with a ‘£50 million’ double swoop for both Wolves star Adama Traore and Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

The Lilywhites are ‘set’ to make an improved offer for the former, while they have also joined the chase for Carlos in what could be a blow to Newcastle United’s chances of signing him.

The Verdict: Exciting claim…

Bolstering Conte’s options with the duo would certainly come as a very exciting piece of business and transfer chief Fabio Paratici may have to pull out all the stops to make it happen.

Traore, lauded as the ‘perfect fit’ for Spurs and someone who could ‘really excite’ the fans by pundit Noel Whelan, simply must be followed by Carlos who is a proven La Liga defender.

According to WhoScored, out of Tottenham’s current crop of players, only top-performing Lilywhites centre-back Eric Dier has averaged more clearances per 90 (3.8) compared to the 28-year-old (3.6).

If Paratici, Levy and Conte can make this double move happen, it would surely boost Spurs’ chances of a top four finish.

Yorkshire left to regret missed chances

If Yorkshire struggle to avoid relegation this season, they may reflect on the third day of this match with a great deal of regret

George Dobell at Edgbaston 11-Apr-2010
ScorecardIf Yorkshire struggle to avoid relegation this season, they may reflect on the third day of this match with a great deal of regret. Yes, it’s early to be talking about such issues. But the bookies make Andrew Gale’s side favourites for the drop, so they can ill afford to squander match-winning opportunities. Particularly against another side that could find themselves in the relegation mix.But Yorkshire certainly spurned a good chance here. With Warwickshire struggling to build a challenging target, the visiting fielders dropped several potential catches, allowing the hosts to set a target perhaps 60 more than should have been the case. On such a wicket, that’s a significant amount of runs.Jim Troughton was the grateful recipient on two occasions. First, on 50, he offered a chance off the leading edge that looped high over the slips. Anthony McGrath and Tim Bresnan both made ground quickly but though the former appeared to have clung on, he became tangled in the latter and the ball went to ground. Neither man appeared to call for the catch.Had it been taken, Warwickshire would have been eight down and only 215 ahead.Moments later Troughton was missed again. This time it was Yorkshire’s wicketkeeper, Jonathan Bairstow, who put down the regulation outside edge. The unfortunate bowler on both occasions was Oliver Hannon-Dalby. In just his second first-class game, he bounced back from a disappointing display in the first innings with a sustained and impressive display of fast-medium bowling. At one stage claimed four for 19 in 29 balls and later returned to wrap-up the innings and claim the first five-wicket haul of a career that promises much. Those of a certain persuasion might be interested to learn that he is the first Yorkshireman with a double-barrelled name to achieve such a feat. His spell changed the game. Until then, Warwickshire appeared to be progressing smoothly, with Jonathan Trott and Jim Troughton posting 105 for the fourth wicket and inching their side into the ascendancy. Using his great height (six feet, eight inches) to extract extra bounce, Hannon-Dalby utilised the helpful conditions sensibly and maintained a consistently good line and length. He has no great pace of yet but, aged just 20, could yet fill-out and become a very useful player. It was Trott’s dismissal that sparked the decline. Trott, smarting at his rejection from England’s ODI and T20 teams, had batted with great assurance but, drawn into pushing at one he could have left off the back foot, he edged to second slip. Three balls later Tim Ambrose, who looks to be in no form at all, played a similar stroke and was dropped at slip by Bresnan. Ambrose failed to take advantage, however, succumbing to the next delivery as he swung – horribly – across the line. Hannon-Dalby then defeated Chris Woakes’ tentative forward defensive, before Neil Carter drove straight to mid-off.Troughton and Naqaash Tahir resisted, however. Though Naqaash played and missed often, the pair added 64 for the eighth wicket, with Troughton flourishing after a sticky start and unveiling some characteristically flowing strokes through the covers. He was finally defeated by a fine inswinger from the impressive Steve Patterson, before Naqaash played across a straight one and was trapped in front.By then, however, Yorkshire’s profligacy had enabled Warwickshire to set a target of 291.Perhaps they will feel their total should have been even higher, however. With Ian Bell and Varun Chopra building a solid platform and Troughton and Trott capitalising with half-centuries, Warwickshire appeared to be earning a winning position. Certainly Bell, on his 28th birthday, will regret his dismissal moments after completing an untroubled half-century. In attempting to drive a ball that was never there for the stroke he succeeded only in slicing to point, while Chopra, half-forward to one that left him, edged to slip. The most impressive batting of the match to date has come from Trott, however. Punching powerfully through the covers and clipping through mid-wicket with style, he allowed no margin for error and demonstrated the technique and temperament necessary to master such testing conditions. He gave one half-chance, on 70, when he edged Bresnan just to the right of McGrath at slip, but otherwise this was a masterful demonstration.Yorkshire started well in pursuit of their target but, with Joe Sayers following one angled across him before the close, Warwickshire should still be considered narrow favourites to claim just their fourth championship win at Edgbaston since April 2007.The pitch has eased somewhat, but still offers help to bowlers of all types. Certainly it has contributed to a wonderfully engaging game of cricket that has provided a great deal more entertainment than the run-drenched draws so prevalent at Edgbaston in recent seasons. An appetising final day looms.

Lage reveals latest on Willy Boly

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has revealed the latest on injured defender Willy Boly’s status, with the Ivory Coast international having made just one appearance under the Portuguese this season.

What’s the latest?

Boly endured an injury-stricken 2021, playing just 11 games in all competitions across the calendar year and is yet to appear in the Premier League this season, having made just one appearance in the EFL Cup.

The 30-year-old most recently made the squad for Wolves’ 1-0 win at Brighton in mid-December, although another setback has ruled the defender out of action for the Golden Boys as well as for his native Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations.

Speaking to the media about Boly’s situation, Lage said: “He has some muscular problems and sometimes doesn’t feel comfortable with it. That’s why sometimes he is ready to play, then he starts training and feels a little pain.

“It’s important when you are in that position you feel ready and confident.

“This situation is not good for Boly, it’s not good for me and it’s not good for the club,” the 45-year-old added. “Every time he comes, he goes. He needs time to work, to prepare himself, because he was important in the past and can help the team to be better.

“He has a contract with us, and he’s a top player, and he stayed with us instead of going to the national team – it means something. He preferred to stay with us and recover. This is a good signal.”

Wolves fans will be gutted

The Ivorian is certainly a popular figure amongst the Molineux faithful, having played a major part in getting the West Midlands club back to the Premier League in the 2017/18 campaign, in which he made 36 Championship appearances.

Moreover, the 30-year-old was vital in Wolves’ first campaign back in the top-flight as he missed just two of their 38 league matches.

However, it now appears as though there is little room for the centre-back in the starting line up, that is with everyone available.

The regular trio of Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Romain Saiss has been a revelation this campaign, with Wolves the Premier League’s second-best defenders behind league leaders Manchester City, having conceded just 15 goals in 20 matches.

Boly will have to find a solution to his reoccurring issues, if not, it may prove to be the end of his tenure in the West Midlands. Considering his popularity among the fanbase, this is an eventuality that would leave the Molineux faithful gutted.
