'ICC sent Butt, Akmal notices after World Twenty20'

Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal were sent notices by the ICC this year after the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has said

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Sep-2010Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal were sent notices by the ICC this year after the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has said. However, the notices were sent directly to the players and without the ICC informing the PCB they were being sent.”That is confidential for now and we don’t know the details of that,” Ijaz Butt said in Lahore, where he was addressing a press conference on Thursday.ESPNcricinfo had on Monday reported that two Pakistan cricketers – part of the squad in England – were issued notices by the ICC seeking information nearly a month before the spot-fixing scandal broke during the Lord’s Test last month. It is not immediately clear whether this is the same case Butt referred to.

Cricinfo previews the final of the tri-series between India and Sri Lanka

Big PictureAt long last, the seemingly interminable run of India-Sri Lanka matches, starting from the Asia Cup in 2008, will come to an end on Saturday. However, the bowler-friendly conditions in Dambulla have made it difficult to predict how even these most familiar of opponents will match up.Sri Lanka, almost at full strength, probably have the edge, as their batting hasn’t had the embarrassing collapses India have. India, though, have shown the happy knack of raising their game for the finals of tournaments in Sri Lanka, winning two titles over the past year, despite looking second-best in the league phase.Virender Sehwag’s chalk-and-cheese match-winning innings will make him the player Sri Lanka will fear, but the final also opens up an opportunity for the younger batsmen in the Indian side to cement their places, much like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif famously did in England during the build-up to the 2003 World Cup.The final could well hinge on how the team’s back-up bowlers perform. Every team’s new-ball bowlers have been among the wickets. In the opening game, India had nipped out three early wickets but the loss of Abhimanyu Mithun to a heatstroke helped New Zealand fight back and reach the tournament’s highest total. Similarly, on Wednesday, New Zealand, missing Daryl Tuffey and Jacob Oram, let India escape after some early wickets. One advantage Sri Lanka have is their batting depth. Thisara Perera, who showed off his hitting skills during a nets session on Friday morning, is likely to slot in at No. 8. In contrast, India have a long tail and the player filling the allrounder’s spot at No. 7, Ravindra Jadeja, hasn’t inspired any confidence with his batting.Form guide(most recent outright results first)
Sri Lanka: WLWLW
India: WLWLWWatch out for…Praveen Kumar has perfected the art of providing India early breakthroughs in Dambulla. His dismissal of Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first over of the Asia Cup final set India on the road to the title. In the tri-series, he has invariably picked up a wicket in his first couple of overs, exploiting the seam movement on offer, immediately putting the opposition on the backfoot.Angelo Mathews has established himself as Sri Lanka’s No. 1 allrounder over the past year, providing the team balance with his versatile batting, accurate medium-pace and unflappable temperament. He hasn’t contributed much with the bat this tournament, a blot he could erase in the final.Pitch and conditionsDhoni spent plenty of time inspecting the pitch for the final, getting down on his knees to get a close look and then having a long chat with coach Gary Kirsten and bowling coach Eric Simons. The curator, Anuruddha Polonowita, said the track hasn’t been used previously in the tournament but he expects it to be one which provides plenty of help for the bowlers, similar to the surfaces in the league phase.Team newsSri Lanka have no injury concerns and could retain the XI that humbled India in their final league matches. Chamara Silva made a polished unbeaten 41 in his only chance to bat, Chamara Kapugedera hasn’t got too many chances in this tournament, and Perera’s five-for last Sunday should guarantee him a place in the side.Sri Lanka (likely) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Suraj Randiv, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Lasith MalingaIndia haven’t experimented too much in this tournament despite their fluctuating form. Raw youngsters like offspinner R Ashwin and middle-order batsman Saurabh Tiwary weren’t tried in the league phase, so the bench beckons them for the final as well. The four-pacers strategy worked well in the crunch match against New Zealand, so India will probably stick to that in the final as well. Dhoni said India would consider dropping Ravindra Jadeja in case they play an extra batsman at No.7.India (likely) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Dinesh Karthik, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/ Rohit Sharma, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Munaf Patel
Quotes “I think when you are going well it is nice to keep going in important games. But before the tournament started we knew the schedule. So there are no complaints from our side.”

Scorecard
The fourth match of the tri-series, between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, became the first-ever ODI in Dambulla to be abandoned because of rain. It wasn’t abandoned in the true sense of the word: there was a reserve day assigned for every match of the tournament, and both teams were to have the toss again on Friday. Heavy rain hit Dambulla soon after New Zealand won the toss today and elected to bat. This game was supposed to restore the focus on on-field action after the last three days were dominated by the the Suraj Randiv no-ball, allegations, inquiries, and suspensions. As a result, Randiv, who bowled the no-ball to deny Virender Sehwag a century in the previous game, was suspended for this ODI, and the washed-out day’s play won’t count as time served for him.Apart from Rangana Herath replacing Randiv, Sri Lanka had brought in an extra spinner in Ajantha Mendis ahead of Dilhara Fernando, and also got the younger Chamara Silva to replace Thilan Samaraweera. They continued showing faith in Chamara Kapugedera.New Zealand welcomed back Jacob Oram and Grant Elliot, but had to do without Martin Guptill who injured himself in the lead-up to the match. Peter Ingram took his place. On Friday, though, both teams will be allowed to name fresh XIs.Sri Lanka: 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga.New Zealand: 1 Peter Ingram, 2 BJ Watling, 3 Ross Taylor (capt.), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Grant Elliot, 8 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Daryl Tuffey

Wolves’ Kilman linked with Chelsea transfer

Having said goodbye to Adama Traore during the recent January transfer window on a loan deal to Barcelona with a permanent move in the summer being a possibility, it seems as though Wolves could lose one of their other prominent figures in the same window.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from talkSPORT, Wolves defender Max Kilman is being eyed up by fellow Premier League side Chelsea for a potential summer transfer move.

Since joining the Midlands club back in the 2018 summer window on a free transfer from Maidenhead United, the 24-year-old has gone on to make 60 senior appearances for the Old Gold across all competitions, chipping in with one goal and two assists along the way.

Lage would be furious

Having racked up more minutes in the Premier League this season than any other outfield Wolves player, it shows just how highly-rated and important Kilman is by his manager Bruno Lage.

With an overall performance rating of 7/10, making him the fourth-highest rated Wolves player in the league this season according to WhoScored, it’s safe to say that Lage would be rather unhappy to see the centre-back leave Molineux this summer for a move to Chelsea.

After all, this is a player who has won more tackles per game (1.7) than any other Wolves centre-half this term and somebody who has made the most interceptions a match (1.8). Evidently, he is a key cog in the wheel and replacing him astutely would be a tall order for the club’s hierarchy.

However, with the Englishman’s current contract at Wolves not due to expire until 2026 and the fact that Lage’s side are on the hunt to secure European football by the end of the season, this could work in the club’s favour to keep Kilman where he is for the time being.

That said, if Wolves did indeed end up selling the defender to Chelsea this summer, it would surely be an unforgivable calamity from Fosun to get rid of one of the club’s most important and prominent figures, who is currently on course to have a long career at Molineux.

On the other hand, if Wolves were to ask for a hefty transfer fee from the west London club if they do make an approach for Kilman, they could then use that fee to sign a replacement for him if Chelsea were willing to splash the cash to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

-A expectativa é boa.

KPL set for second season

The second season of the Karnataka Premier League is set to get underway from September 18 and the stand-out feature this year is the expansion of the tournament to other centres in the state such as Manipal and Hubli. The Twenty20 tournament, which ends on October 3, will feature the same eight franchises as last year, following a round-robin format with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals.Bangalore got a generous share of the matches last year, with Mysore hosting a few games. Going by the enthusiastic response generated in Mysore, the organisers have capitalised on it by granting the semi-finals and the final to the city. The host association, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), has decided to spread the tournament evenly between all four venues. The tournament kicks off at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, which will host the first four days. The players then go to Hubli for the next leg before heading to the university town of Manipal, near the coastal city of Mangalore. Mysore will host the final leg.Karnataka was the first state to introduce a local franchise-based Twenty20 tournament, taking a cue from the hugely successful IPL after its second season. There will be a player-transfer window for the tournament between August 15 and 30, during which time the franchises will have to finalise their squads – a minimum of 14 players and a maximum of 22. Those who’ve signed two-year contracts are also eligible to be transferred, provided the concerned franchises and players come to an agreement.Brijesh Patel, the secretary of the KSCA, said he was excited by the opportunities on offer for players from smaller centres but was also aware of the challenges from the organisers’ point of view.”The KPL has opened doors for players from mofussil areas and for coaches as well. The boys are getting more confident in playing in front of big crowds,” Patel said at a press conference in Bangalore. “We know there will be logistical issues, such as erecting temporary structures and transporting players. We’re trying to get the cricketing facilities on par with that of Bangalore.”Patel added the KSCA is constructing a stadium in Hubli, which could be upgraded to first-class status if it passes the test during this tournament. Bangalore will host the only four day-night games. The lesser-known players have the most to gain from the KPL and Patel said it would serve as a feeder-system for the IPL auctions and for selection into the state team. Although he was satisfied with the enthusiasm shown by the players in the opening season, he felt some needed to train harder.”I thought the quality of cricket in the first season was good. However, the physical fitness needs to improve,” Patel said. “Some of them couldn’t get past those 15 days, often suffering from cramps.”There was talk after the first season to get players from outside Karnataka to participate but the BCCI rejected the proposal. Patel, however, didn’t understand why it should be an issue. “The BCCI did not approve it. If the host association (KSCA) has no issue, then what’s the problem?”The tournament, however, could miss star state players like Abhimanyu Mithun, Vinay Kumar and Manish Pandey, who will be away in South Africa representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Champions League, between September 10 and 26. They could be available only for the final leg of the KPL or earlier, depending on their progress in South Africa.Bangalore Provident (Rural) are the defending champions after beating Belagavi Panthers under lights in Bangalore last year.

South Africa retain edge on run-heavy day

The South Africans continued to cruise along a Country Road of a pitch at Warner Park for the second day in a row, increasing their century count to three before eventually declaring at a seemingly unassailable 543. Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers made contrasting centuries against a listless bowling attack, and though West Indies weren’t guilty of any glaring errors unlike the opening day, their body language suggested they were waiting for the inevitable declaration. After spending the better part of two days on the field, West Indies made a decent start with the bat after losing Travis Dowlin early. Chris Gayle and Narsingh Deonarine blunted the new-ball pair of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and proceeded to 86 for 1 before bad light intervened.South Africa were well on course to a massive score after setting a solid platform on the opening day. They approached the second with a plan. Preservation of wickets, without too many risks, was the theme of the opening session but after lunch, the aim was acceleration. de Villiers, who has the ability to shift gears according to the situation, stepped on the gas as South Africa eyed a declaration. He started off the day watchfully, but found his groove against the easy offerings from Ravi Rampaul. A short delivery was crunched past midwicket and a fuller one was crashed past cover. When spin was introduced, de Villiers sashayed down the track to pull out some exquisite lofts.de Villiers began the afternoon session with a cut off Sulieman Benn to bring up his fifty, followed by a bludgeoning pull off the same bowler to clear deep square leg. The timing of his shots was exemplified by two gorgeous drives off the front foot off Kemar Roach, one past cover and the other wide of mid-on. Placement was not an issue for de Villiers as he used his feet to the spinners and bisected gaps perfectly towards the on-side boundary. He brought out the chipped shots, firm sweeps and front foot pulls with crisp timing. His first fifty came off 84 balls while his second came off just 46. Unlike Kallis, who plodded around for 15 balls on 99, de Villiers searched for the quickest route to the top. He went from 95 to 101 by chipping down the track to Benn and launching him over long-on.He celebrating his tenth Test ton by popping a pill and dashing to the loo for an unusually long break, much to amusement to his team-mates and the spectators. A declaration was around the corner as the tea break neared and de Villiers predictably maintained the pace. On either side of the tea break, he gave Shane Shillingford a hard time by dancing down the track to fetch massive sixes.Kallis’ knock wasn’t as exhilarating, but he ensured South Africa didn’t lose any wickets in the morning. He approached his fifty with a neat reverse-sweep for four and then brought up his milestone with a conventional one down to fine leg. He was tested against the new ball by Roach who kept banging it short, including one that smacked him on the helmet. But Roach got monotonous with his length and Kallis started pulling him regularly pulled past square leg.Kallis flicked Bravo stylishly past midwicket to become the sixth batsman to pass 11000 Test runs. Post lunch, after a long wait in the nineties, he reached his century with a cut past backward point. A top edged sweep to Rampaul at long leg – a fine catch falling backwards – ended his knock, but his 138-run association set up the declaration. There was no pitch deterioration or variable bounce when West Indies came out to bat. Dowlin, who did well in Australia in his new role as opener to see off the new ball, failed to replicate that here. He reached forward and poked at a Morkel delivery shaping away from him and the resultant outside edge was taken by an agile de Villiers at third slip.West Indies ensured they didn’t repeat the mistake of sending Brendan Nash at No.3 and instead sent in Deonarine, who’s more accustomed to the position. Morkel peppered him with short balls from over the wicket, with one pounding his elbow. Gayle was watchful against the seamers early on, preparing to leave deliveries shaping away from him. However, he was classy against the fuller deliveries coming in to him. After stabbing at one from Lonwabo Tsotsobe, which scorched down the ground, he cracked two delightful boundaries past mid-off off Morkel. Deonarine too capitalised on the pitched-up deliveries and when Paul Harris was introduced, he welcomed him with a huge six over long-on. The pair also did well to fend off the short deliveries in fading light. With the pitch still loaded with runs, the outcome of the game will depend on how long West Indies bat.
