Corintianos deixam o Independência lamentando chances perdidas

Flower keen to pass on lessons

Andy Flower, the England team director, is keen to ensure lessons are learned on the team’s recent overseas tours are not limited to the senior squad and get passed down the chain to younger players.

Andy Flower, the England team director, is keen to ensure lessons are learned on the team’s recent overseas tours are not limited to the senior squad and get passed down the chain to younger players. Flower was boosted by the strides made by the batsmen in Sri Lanka as they fought back to level the series with a convincing eight-wicket win in Colombo following the whitewash against Pakistan in the UAE.The success was set up by Kevin Pietersen’s barnstorming 151 but Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Andrew Strauss all played important innings. But the revival was started by Trott in the second innings in Galle when his 112, although not able to prevent defeat, showed how batsmen can succeed by playing to their strengths.England’s other representative sides – the Lions and Under-19 team – also toured Asia over the last six months with mixed results. The Lions lost in Bangladesh but won in Sri Lanka, while the Under-19s were beaten 5-2 in a one-day series in Bangladesh. Flower wants all levels of the professional game to work together to improve England’s cricket in these conditions.”It is our job, not only to embed all those lessons but also to continue building on want we’ve learnt,” Flower said. “We also need to pass on those lessons to younger English cricketers so that when they are playing international cricket they don’t make the same mistakes as ours did this winter. I think that’s quite important.”It has been a tough winter but our focus has never wavered, our determination has never wavered and I think you would probably have see that best in the field. I think that was a good indication of where the group was. Yes it’s been tough but it’s brilliant to come back and level the series. It’s a real pity that it’s not a three-Test series – both Tests were excellent matches played on good pitches.”England almost left it too late to put in a complete batting performance and while Flower acknowledged it was a lengthy phase of trial and error, the end result has left him very hopeful of what can be achieved in the future.”We all want instant results but the world doesn’t work as easily as that but I do think it’s exciting watching excellent cricketers still have the capacity to learn and improve themselves,” he said. “I think good sides and good players have that capacity and are humble enough to open themselves up to new learning experiences. And I think we did see evidence of our guys learning in the second dig in Galle and out here.”Eoin Morgan was the one batsman to pay with his place after the Pakistan series and there will be focus on Ian Bell and Strauss when England resume action against West Indies in May. Bell has had a poor few months with just one half-century, in the first innings in Galle, to show as reward and his dismissal in Colombo – pulling a long hop to midwicket – was an inglorious way to finish.Strauss, meanwhile, struck an important 61 to lay the foundation alongside Cook in Colombo but has now one Test hundred in 50 innings. From within the team there remains no doubt over his position – something reiterated by Flower – yet he could still do with a productive summer against West Indies and South Africa. Bell, too, will not be dropped although will need to convince the selectors that he has the game to succeed in India next winter with Flower insisting no one is immune to scrutiny.Heading into the home season, No. 6 is the likely spot up for grabs if England revert to their regular balance of six batsmen, a keeper, three quicks and a spinner. Ravi Bopara was the spare batsman on the two recent tours after picking up a side strain in Sri Lanka being overlooked for Samit Patel.”Not one player owns a position in the batting order,” Flower said. “There’s competition for all places. Of course some are more secure than others but I don’t want to comment who’ll bat at six against the West Indies as I need to talk to the selectors. We’ll be having a selection meeting later this month and that’s when we’ll be discussing it in greater detail.”Neither would Flower be drawn on whether he thought the top six that played in Sri Lanka was the ideal combination for India at the end of the year. “I think it’s a little early to say that this batting unit will be there at the end of the year, we don’t know how things are going to pan out,” he said. “Yes, this batting unit is good enough to score heavy runs in India but part of our job is to ensure it isn’t a closed shop and if there are other players in England, we want them pushing the top seven here, constantly. That will drive our standards upwards.”

Clare gives Derbyshire the edge

Allrounder Jon Clare took 5 for 17 and also contributed an unbeaten 40 as Derbyshire took the upper hand against Glamorgan

13-Apr-2012
ScorecardAllrounder Jon Clare took 5 for 17 and also contributed an unbeaten 40 as Derbyshire took the upper hand on the second day of their County Championship Division Two clash with Glamorgan.Derbyshire ended the day on 152 for 6 in their second innings, an overall lead of 187 after bowling Glamorgan out for 95. They were also indebted to David Wainwright and Ross Whiteley who put on 60 for the sixth wicket after Glamorgan had reduced them to 37 for 5. Wainwright then shared an unbroken stand of 55 with Clare.Following a patient start to the second day from Moises Henriques and nightwatchman Dean Cosker, after Glamorgan resumed on 37 for 4, the wickets suddenly fell one after the other. They lost their last six wickets in 11.4 overs for the addition of 37 runs as they slumped from 58 for 4 to 95 all out – Glamorgan’s lowest score against Derbyshire since the 85 they accrued at Derby in 1970.It all started with Tony Palladino removing Henriques’ off stump before Clare found himself on a hat-trick. He bowled Cosker and next ball captain Mark Wallace also watched his off stump cartwheel backwards. Graham Wagg did survive the hat-trick ball, but then went to a return catch in Clare’s next over. Glamorgan found themselves 85 for 9 with Clare taking his fifth wicket to trap Jim Allenby leg before before Robert Croft edged Wainwright’s first ball of the match to slip.Derbyshire lost a wicket to the third ball of their second innings when Wagg trapped Martin Guptill for a duck. After reaching 7 for 1 at lunch the visitors added a further 10 until Wayne Madsen was caught down the leg-side by wicketkeeper Wallace off Henriques, who struck twice more to remove Wes Durston and Paul Borrington as Derbyshire found themselves 37 for 5.But either side of tea the sixth wicket of Whiteley and Wainwright, who had put on 48 in the first innings, added more valuable runs to take Derbyshire’s lead to more than 100. The pair seemed to be comfortable until Whiteley was run out with a direct throw by Ben Wright running in from cover as he attempted quick single. It ended the partnership of 60 in 29.4 overs, but Derbyshire’s lead continued to increase as Wainwright and Clare hit consecutive sixes off Cosker and Henriques respectively before bad light stopped play with six overs still to bowl.

Shailender Gehlot blows Madhya Pradesh away for 48

A round-up of the action from the fourth day of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2011-12

Railways fast bowler Shailender Gehlot took a career-best six wickets as Madhya Pradesh were blown away for 48 in Jamtha, Nagpur. Mahesh Rawat, the Railways wicketkeeper, finished with seven catches, one short of the List A record. Only Rameez Khan managed to get into double figures as Madhya Pradesh lasted 17.3 overs. Gehlot had figures of 9-2-20-6 and Krishnakant Upadhyay chipped in with three wickets. Railways knocked off the target in ten overs for the loss of one wicket.Piyush Chawla picked up three wickets and made a half-century as Uttar Pradesh beat Rajasthan by six wickets in Nagpur. Chawla and Imtiyaz Ahmed restricted Rajasthan to 202 for 9 with three strikes apiece. Only Rashmi Parida (57) managed a score of note for Rajasthan with four batsmen falling after making twenties. Kaif added 82 for the second wicket with Tanmay Srivastava (40) and 91 for the fourth with Chawla (63), who hammered ten boundaries off 43 deliveries. Kaif was unbeaten on 79 as Uttar Pradesh won in the 39th over.West ZoneChirag Jani almost took Saurashtra to an improbable win on his List A debut at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground in Mumbai before Maharashtra prevailed by two runs. Chasing 310 for 5, Saurashtra were almost out of the match at 232 for 9 in the 43rd over, but No. 8 batsman Jani smashed ten fours and six sixes in racing to an unbeaten 98 off only 67 deliveries. Siddharth Trivedi, the No. 11, faced only nine balls during the last-wicket partnership as Jani went after Maharashtra. Jani’s effort was to end in vain as Saurashtra ended on 308 for 9 in their 50 overs. Saurashtra opener Sagar Jogiyani’s century, too, was ultimately for a losing cause but Rohit Motwani’s and Ankit Bawne’s tons weren’t. Motwani (101) and Bawne (117) were involved in a double-century partnership as Maharashtra recovered from 35 for 2.Mumbai’s bowlers came back strongly as the hosts stopped Gujarat eight runs short of the target of 234 at Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai had former captain Wasim Jaffer to thank for lifting them from 111 for 7. With Iqbal Abdulla and Dhawal Kulkarni providing support down the order, Jaffer breezed to 104 off 119 deliveries to take Mumbai to 233 for 9. Gujarat’s opening pair of Avi Barot (57) and Priyank Panchal (76) added 127 to put their side firmly in front. Abdulla brought Mumbai back into the game. He had Barot stumped in the 32nd over and trapped Niraj Patel lbw in the 34th. Ajit Agarkar removed Panchal and Manprit Juneja as Gujarat slipped to 155 for 5. Bhavik Thaker and Akshar Patel took the score past 200 but Agarkar bowled Thaker and Abdulla got Akshar. Gujarat needed 14 off the final over but managed only five to end on 225 for 9.South ZoneHyderabad surged to three wins in three games, chasing 311 successfully against Goa at the Rajinder Singh Institute Ground in Bangalore. The chase was fashioned by an unbeaten ton from opener and captain DB Ravi Teja, assisted by 70 from Akshath Reddy and a ballistic 66 not out off 27 balls from Ashish Reddy.Hyderabad were under pressure when they lost their fifth wicket at 207 in the 37th over, but Ashish’s belligerence meant the next 104 runs came in just 50 balls. Hyderabad were home with five overs to spare, an eventuality few would have predicted when Swapnil Asnodkar’s 127 lifted Goa to a tall score. But the day was about to be seized by Ravi Teja (119* off 117) and his men.Kerala sailed past Andhra’s score of 278 for 9 in the 50th over at the Jain International Residential School Ground in Bangalore to register their first win in three games. In hindsight, they had Prasanth Parameswaran to thank. The seamer finished with incongruously incisive tally of 5 for 27 in his ten overs, including all the three maidens in the Andhra innings. Raiphi Gomez complemented him with figures of 10-0-35-1. Syed Sahabuddin and Venugopal Rao set up the base for Andhra with fifties, but the difference between an average score and a competent one came thanks to Gonnabattula Chiranjeevi’s 53 off 47. Kerala’s chase was anchored by Sachin Baby (78 off 90), while VA Jagadeesh, Sanju Samson and Karimuttathu Rakesh all contributed scores in the 40s. A series of frequent strikes meant Kerala’s lower order had to step up, and Padmanabhan Prasanth did just that with 31 not out off 26 balls, as the game ended with two balls to spare.Dinesh Karthik’s 137 (132 balls, 18 fours, four sixes) helped Tamil Nadu brush aside Karnataka by a 62-run margin at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Asked to bat first, TN got off to a messy start thanks to Abhimanyu Mithun with Abhinav Mukund, S Anirudha and S Badrinath contributing just six runs between them. K Vasudevadas also failed to get going as TN slipped to a precarious 45 for 4. Ramaswamy Prasanna and Karthik steadied the ship with a 119-run stand that spanned the bulk of the middle overs. Karthik stepped up the scoring gradually, before L Balaji carted five fours in 28 off 18 balls. Balaji came back to wrap up Karnataka’s chase with three wickets, but the significant damage was done by his new-ball partner K Jesuraj. Robin Uthappa smacked 35 off 28 balls, but the innings floundered gradually following his contribution. SN Raju’s 46 narrowed the margin of defeat, but TN still got the bonus point.

'Bangladesh can't make do with left-arm spin only' – Muralitharan

Muttiah Muralitharan has said that Bangladesh will need variety in their bowling stocks to complement the surfeit of left-arm spinners emerging in the country

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Feb-2012

Muttiah Muralitharan: “The coaches have a role in telling the bowlers how to adjust properly to different formats”•AFP

Muttiah Muralitharan has said that Bangladesh will need variety in their bowling stocks to complement the surfeit of left-arm spinners emerging in the country. The retired Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in Test and ODI history, is a part of the Chittagong Kings side for the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. His observations came after Chittagong’s encounter with Dhaka Gladiators on Monday, a game in which as many as five left-arm spinners played.”Most spinners in Bangladesh are left-armers so you need variety in bowling,” Muralitharan told the . “If you want to do well outside the country, fast bowlers, legspinners and offspinners are needed. You can’t just rely on left-arm spinners; I can see there are four-five left-arm spinners in each BPL squad. It might work here, but not in other countries.”I am telling Bangladesh that you can’t make do with left-arm spinners only, get some variety.”Muralitharan, whose last international was the 2011 World Cup final, is satisfied with the spinning talent in world cricket, though he is concerned by the impact of three varied formats on spinners’ skills. “There’s Daniel Vettori, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Shakib Al Hasan, Graeme Swann, Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin. Sri Lanka has Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath, while from West Indies Sunil Narine is also coming up.”But I am also worried about the spinners. They have to bowl flatter and faster in Twenty20 cricket while it is a different game in Tests. The coaches have a role here, they have to tell the bowlers how to adjust properly.”Muralitharan has courted success in the Twenty20 format, being a part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise that won the IPL and Champions League in 2010. His participation in the BPL was unplanned, but he looks at it as an opportunity to train ahead of IPL 2012.”I didn’t think I would play in this tournament, so I didn’t train much. The last time I bowled before this was on January 4 but it’s good that I’m playing. I can prepare for the IPL.”
