PIF and Howe Disagreement On Transfer Target For Newcastle

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe would prefer to sign Barcelona forward Ferran Torres over Paris Saint-German superstar Neymar, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Ferran Torres and Neymar?

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle United are keen on Barcelona attacker Torres and the £167k-a-week star could be put up for sale by his current employers to help ease their financial concerns.

The report states that Barcelona need to raise around £160 million through player sales, with Torres and former Leeds United winger Raphinha candidates to be moved on in the off-season.

As per 90min, Newcastle United owners PIF want to make a high-profile signing at St James' Park this summer and Neymar has been identified as a potential 'marquee' addition to strengthen boss Howe's offensive pool of options.

Al Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo has also been discussed internally by the Magpies' ownership as they have a direct link to the Saudi Pro League outfit.

Nevertheless, Howe has recently cast doubt on the prospect of one of £929k-a-week superstar Neymar or football icon Ronaldo pitching up in the North East any time soon, as per talkSPORT, stating in an interview: “It is best to discover them before they explode onto the world scene. We could not be able to come close to affording those players as they are the best players in the world. We are never going to be in a position currently to afford those transfer fees and wages, so we need to go underneath and find them young and develop them into the players they can be."

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones also echoes the sentiment that it is unlikely that Newcastle United would enter the market this summer to sign Neymar and thinks that Barcelona man Torres would be a more realistic target.

Jones said: “Eddie Howe would probably prefer a signing like that [Torres] than a Neymar because it’s a bit easier for him to control the narrative and also not have that superstar feel to his dressing room.

"I think he wants to put that off for as long as possible to be honest. I know that there’s a need and want from PIF to have those characters in the dressing room, but it doesn’t really reflect who Eddie Howe is.”

Would Ferran Torres be a better signing than Neymar for Newcastle United?

Neymar is a supremely gifted footballer who would be an asset to any elite-level side; nevertheless, he would come with an enormous reputation that would be reflected in the dressing room in terms of power verticles, while there is an argument to say that Torres would be a more sensible signing due to his suitability to Howe's tactical framework.

In 2022/23, Torres made 45 appearances across the 2022/23 campaign, registering seven goals and three assists in total, as per Transfermarkt – while Neymar got 18 goals and 17 assists in just 29 matches.

ferran-torres-newcastle-united-transfer-opinion-premier-league

Capable of playing in a variety of roles, Torres was also a constant menace to defenders this term and managed 1.2 shots per game in La Liga, according to WhoScored.

Torres has also excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions regarding progressive passes received, averaging a score of around 11.35 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the eighth percentile, as detailed by FBRef.

Given that Torres is still only 23 years old, he would provide more long-term stability than Neymar, who is 31, which is something that Howe will likely factor in when assessing potential signings this summer.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan will play their first-ever bilateral ODI series in September, the Afghanistan Cricket Board and BCB confirmed on Sunday. The two sides will play the three-match series on September 25, 28 and October 1 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.Afghanistan’s only other experience playing against a Full Member side in bilateral ODI series is against Zimbabwe, with whom they have played three series so far.In two previous 50-over encounters with Bangladesh, Afghanistan have won one and lost one; they beat Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2014 but lost in the 2015 World Cup.ACB chairman Nasimullah Danish said that Afghanistan are trying to get more games with Full Members, and Bangladesh is just the start. “We are looking forward [to] entertaining cricket,” he said. “We are in close discussion with ICC Full Members. It’s always good for our team development to test ourselves in different conditions, and there’s no better place than Bangladesh to do that.”

Man Utd’s £190k-p/w "Disaster" Must Not Play Again

With the Premier League season now at a close, Manchester United will now be turning their attention toward Saturday's FA Cup final showdown with Manchester City, with Erik ten Hag and his men having the chance to cap what has already been a fine debut season in charge for the Dutchman.

With Champions League qualification having been clinched – as well as Carabao Cup glory – the aim for the Red Devils will be to end their season on an even greater high by stopping their treble-chasing rivals in their tracks.

Ahead of this weekend's mouthwatering showpiece meeting, one United man who looks unlikely to play a central role in proceedings is club captain, Harry Maguire, with the Englishman having largely been on the periphery this term after making just eight top-flight starts – the last of which came against Fulham on Sunday.

That outing against the Cottagers could well prove to be the 30-year-old's 'final start' for the club – as per GOAL's Richard Martin – with speculation mounting that the £80m addition could be among those to be shown the door by Ten Hag this summer.

While the season-ending injury to Lisandro Martinez had looked to have offered the former Leicester City man the chance of a more prominent role in recent weeks, the £190k-per-week dud has been usurped in the defensive pecking order by Victor Lindelof, with the impressive Swede likely to line up alongside Raphael Varane once again this weekend.

With even Luke Shaw – who started in a centre-back berth in the Manchester derby back in January – having been given the nod over Maguire at times this season, it is difficult to see where the 6 foot 4 brute goes from here…

Will Maguire play for Man United again?

The fact that the one-time Hull City man is set to be restricted to a potential late cameo appearance – if that – against Pep Guardiola's men is a stark indication of his decline, with the 55-cap asset having fallen by the wayside since making an early strong impression upon his arrival back in 2019.

The towering defender initially shone on debut in the 4-0 thrashing against Chelsea at the start of the 2019/20 campaign, with The Guardian's Andy Hunter writing at the time:

'A serene start to life as the world’s most expensive defender. Won every header, distributed cleanly and instigated the crucial second goal.'

Man United's Harry Maguire

Fast forward just under four years and Maguire now looks like a shadow of that once-dominant gem, having been described as a "walking disaster" by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst amid a turbulent campaign for United last season.

As for the 2022/23 campaign, the ailing talent has been resigned to a role as third or fourth-choice centre-back at times, while failing to make his mark when he has featured, notably looking "lost" after starting in the FA Cup clash with Cottagers back in March, according to former MEN writer Hesham Bilal-Hefiz.

The experienced dud was also notably culpable in the dismal Europa League defeat away to Sevilla last month after gifting possession to the La Liga outfit in the build-up to the game's opening goal, having earlier scored an unfortunate own goal in the first-leg stalemate in Manchester.

Those woes have ensured that a departure now looks a mere certainty for Maguire, with Ten Hag himself having only recently stated that the skipper has a "decision" to make over his future, amid the "high competition" for places.

As such, it could well be that the weekend win over Marco Silva's side proves to be the last time the England regular is seen in a United jersey – aside from potentially holding the FA Cup trophy aloft on Saturday…

Captain Cosgrove does the trick again

Centuries from Mark Cosgrove and Mark Pettini saw Leicestershire enjoy a healthy opening day in the Specsavers County Championship at Wantage Road. The pair helped the visitors recover from 61 for 3 to close 330 for 5.Cosgrove, Leicestershire’s captain, made his fourth century of the season and steered his side out of trouble with a stand of 281 for the fourth wicket with Pettini, whose own hundred was his second of the campaign. After tea, Cosgrove flicked a boundary to reach three figures in 167 balls, taking him over 900 Championship runs in the season. But he fell for 111 trying to pull Azharullah – he only found mid-on – shortly before the second new ball.Pettini was very patient after the second break but eventually seized on the chance to twice pull Richard Gleeson into the leg side fence to raise his hundred in 189 balls. The pair saw Leicestershire take control of the day in the afternoon session where they added 151 runs in 36 overs. It was fairly unspectacular with few memorable shots, yet exactly what the visitors were looking for having won the toss.Northamptonshire toiled as their early success was undone but did respond with the second new ball with Gleeson removing Niall O’Brien lbw for 5 and 78 runs came in 32 overs of the final session. Before then, Cosgrove, first to his half-century, in 90 balls with eight fours, found good touch having survived two loose hooks that fell short and then wide of long leg. He was joined by Pettini, whose own fifty took 85 balls and nine fours – the last of which a thick outside edge to third man.It was frustrating for Northants who were in control in the morning session with three wickets for Ben Sanderson reducing Leicestershire to 61 for 3.Fresh from a 10-wicket haul at Swansea, Sanderson picked up wickets in three consecutive overs in the middle of an 11 over spell from the Wantage Road end. All three came in similar fashion with straightening deliveries to take outside edges behind the wicket.First Paul Horton, after five boundaries, edged to Adam Rossinton at first slip, Angus Robson – after a very patient 10 in 56 balls – got a thicker edge to Rory Kleinveldt at third, before Neil Dexter received Sanderson’s best delivery, a lifted that took the shoulder of the bat to wicketkeeper David Murphy.

Celtic In Exit Worry As 57-Year-Old Potentially On Wolves Shortlist

Celtic are once more worrying over the future of boss Ange Postecoglou, with Football Insider reporting that the club are bracing themselves for approaches from a Premier League club this summer.

Will Ange Postecoglou leave Celtic this summer?

The Scottish Premiership side have once more sealed the league title with games to spare. It means that the club have now won back-to-back top-flight trophies, while the side also swooped to bag the Scottish League Cup title, beating their Old Firm rivals once more for that particular piece of silverware – and can complete a treble next week.

It means that boss Postecoglou has now managed to win four trophies in just two campaigns during his time in Scotland. Prior to that, the manager has been an Australian champion on four occasions, won the Asian Cup with Australia and also won the Japanese Championship with Yokohama F. Marinos. It means that he has won trophies pretty much everywhere he has been – and that has now led to reported interest in potentially taking him to England.

According to Football Insider, Wolves' potential search for a new boss could lead them to Postecoglou. The side currently have Julen Lopetegui in charge, but the manager could potentially depart the side this summer with issues over the club's potential spending ability and promises that have been broken over signings being made.

It means that the Premier League outfit could need someone new at the helm in the near future, and Celtic believe Postecoglou could be one of the names bandied around as a potential successor at Molineux. With the boss only having a one-year rolling deal at Parkhead, that also means he is necessarily not committed to the Scottish side in the long term.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

Is Ange Postecoglou going to the Premier League?

The Celtic boss has a superb win rate at the side so far, having managed 93 games and won 66. It means his win percentage stands at 71% – an incredible record for any side.

In comparison, Lopetegui has won ten and lost ten of his games with Wolves, leading to a win percentage of just 38%. Whilst he has been able to steer them away from the drop zone, it still remains the worst rate of his career as a boss, and compared to Postecoglou, it pales in comparison – though Celtic are more high-flyers, of course.

The manager is arguably well-deserving of a chance in the Premier League, although Celtic will be desperate to keep hold of him. Current Australia boss Graham Arnold has called Postecoglou "fantastic" in the past, showing that he is also impressing his colleagues and others in the game, and if Wolves did want to try something different this summer, they could do a lot worse than the 57-year-old.

Therefore, perhaps Celtic have every right to have their concerns.

Newcastle Hold Concrete Interest In "Sensational" £149k-p/w Star

Newcastle United have a concrete interest in signing Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot this summer, but multiple Premier League teams are also eyeing moves, according to a report.

What's the latest Newcastle transfer news?

With Newcastle in a fantastic position to qualify for next year's Champions League, Eddie Howe has started to look at options to strengthen his midfield, and Manchester United's Scott McTominay is said to be on the manager's radar.

The Magpies are also looking at options from further afield, and they are set to send scouts to watch Sporting CP's Manuel Ugarte, but there is likely to be a battle for his signature, with Liverpool named as potential suitors.

OGC Nice's Khephren Thuram is another target to bolster the midfield, although he will not come cheap, as Foot Mercato have recently reported his current club could now be set to demand at least €60m (£52m) to sanction his departure.

One potential low-cost alternative to Thuram is Rabiot, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he will be available on a free transfer, but there could be stiff competition for his signature.

According to a report from CalcioMercato (via Sport Witness), several Premier League clubs hold a concrete interest in the Frenchman, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, while Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona headline the interest from abroad.

The report claims that Howe tried to sign the Juventus star in January 2022, but failed, however, Newcastle should stand a better chance of winning the race for his signature now, given that their new project is now well-defined.

Who will Rabiot sign for?

With so many of Europe's top clubs interested in the 28-year-old, he will face a very difficult decision in the summer, however, you'd like to think the Magpies could stand a good chance, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League.

The £149k-per-week maestro has certainly earned a move, considering he is ranked as Juventus' best-performing player in the Serie A, averaging a 7.15 WhoScored match rating, largely due to the contributions he has made in attack.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

With 11 goals and four assists to his name, the "sensational" midfielder, as dubbed in the media, has weighed in with the second-highest number of goal contributions in the squad, while he is also competent defensively, ranking in the 83rd percentile for clearances per 90 over the past year.

Considering the progress Newcastle have made this season, there is every chance they could win the race for Rabiot's signature, and he could be an excellent addition to the squad.

Somerset's old seafarers scupper Middlesex

Marcus Trescothick moved within one hundred of Harold Gimblett and as Peter Trego added his own century, Somerset made Middlesex fight all the way at Taunton

Middlesex will anticipate the final day of four at Taunton and reflect that on such days are Championships won and lost. With Warwickshire getting little change from the bottom club Hampshire, there is a chance to extend their lead at the top, but Somerset’s lead of 203 with four wickets remaining makes victory in the balance. A tense day lies in prospect. When Middlesex took a first-innings lead of 145 and then removed four Somerset wickets before conceding the lead, their hopes must have been high that they could be well on the way to their third win of the season which would be quite an achievement for an attack lacking Toby Roland-Jones, Steven Finn and Tim Murtagh: 76 wickets between them.Instead, they ran aground on both sides of tea against familiar foes as centuries from Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego lifted Taunton spirits. For 40 overs, as they crashed and carved 181 runs, West Country cricket had a smile on its face again. Middlesex’s stand-in seamers have much to commend them, but they deteriorated under pressure and as a green pitch became firm and true their hold over the match weakened. Here are two fine servants of Somerset cricket: the gentle roll of Trescothick, ambling around the crease with the contentment of a jolly sailor reaching dry land after a satisfying day’s fishing in the Bristol Channel, and the piratical figure of Trego, who is more likely to dock with cutlass and eye patch. They offer fine entertainment, even on a day when a chill wind is whistling around the Quantocks.Trescothick’s 48th first-class century for Somerset takes him second in the county’s all-time list, his innings coming to grief on 124 when James Harris had him caught at the wicket with a delivery of tight line. His latest landmark leaves him just one century behind the great Harold Gimblett, a batsman from five centuries of Quantocks farming stock.Jayawardene stays on

Mahela Jayawardene will now be available to play in the remaining matches in Somerset’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.
Originally the Sri Lankan batsman had only signed for the NatWest T20 Blast campaign but this has now been extended to the 50 over competition.

Trego, the great entertainer, only averages about one hundred a year – destructive 40s and 60s are more his metier – but he played with great certainty and remained 115 not out at the close. To reach his first century of the season, he needed a let-off by John Simpson, the wicketkeeper, on 81, a chance high to his right off James Fuller.Trego said; “It was my 200th game and I never thought I would get to this point. But having been around for such a long time, I have had to make sure that my game has evolved. I needed to dig in for the team and I felt I did that today.”Tres and I have got a great rapport, but a lot of our better partnership[s have been in one day cricket. With Marcus not playing one day games anymore, we don’t often get the chance to bat together. So, yes, it was enjoyable.”Fuller, resuming on 84, had failed to achieve his maiden Championship hundred before lunch, falling nine short when he edged Tim Groenewald to first slip. James Harris fell in identical fashion, their ninth-wicket stand stretched to 162 in 46 overs, and the match in Middlesex’s grasp.Peter Trego shows delight at his century•Getty Images

There was talk of a three-day win as Middlesex, led by three wickets for Harry Podmore, worked through Somerset’s second innings. No batsman likes to lose his middle stump because of a leave alone, but Johann Myburgh could at last reflect that he was beaten by a ball that came back sharply and which he might have felt he could fairly leave on length alone.Chris Rogers – the captain who had risked a greentop, knowing that Somerset would have to have first bat on it – had reason to be doubly frustrated about his duck, guiding Podmore to his former Australian team-mate George Bailey at point. Spin has played a minor role on this pitch, but Ollie Raynor chipped in with the wicket of James Hildreth thanks to a sharp catch at slip from James Franklin.Trescothick, as he has so often, welcomed each new partner with equanimity, a figure of certainty while change happened all around hm. Jim Allenby first provided support until he pulled Podmore to mind-on. Then came Trego and Taunton put its gripes and grievances aside and soaked up the entertainment.
