Palace eyeing Fonseca

An update has emerged on Paulo Fonseca, regarding Crystal Palace’s interest in his services this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to Corriere Dello Sport, as transcribed by TBRF, Crystal Palace are looking at out-of-work manager Paulo Fonseca after his move to Tottenham broke down. The former Roma coach was on the verge of joining Spurs before failing to get it over the line, with Palace now considering a swoop for the 48-year-old.

The report claims Serie A side Fiorentina are also in the race for his services, although it is not stated how high up on Palace’s hitlist he is at this moment in time.

Forget Cooper

Crystal Palace have been linked with Swansea boss Steve Cooper this summer, but it is time to forget about the former England youth boss. Steve Parish must move away from any interest in Cooper and heavily pursue a deal for Fonseca if it is possible. The Eagles chief could revive the club by bringing the Portuguese coach to the club, as he would come in with an impressive track record.

In Cooper’s 105 league matches in charge of Swansea in the Championship, he has accrued 1.61 points per game and has mainly deployed a 3-4-1-2 system built on defensive solidity. His formation at Swansea tended to shift to a 5-3-2 out of possession, with Cooper making sure that his team were able to drop back and stay in shape when up against the ball.

However, Fonseca appears to differ in his approach to the game. The Athletic’s James Horncastle named Roma as one of the Serie’s most entertaining sides earlier this year on the TIFO YouTube channel. “I’d put them with Atalanta and Sassuolo as the league’s entertainers.” Alex Stewart then added to that by describing his style as “exciting.”

This suggests that he employs a style of free-flowing football that may come with more risk than Cooper’s defensive set-up, but could bring more joy to the fans at Selhurst Park. Instead of potentially watching rigid, uninspiring, slow, football and grinding out results to avoid relegation, Fonseca could come in and attempt to excite the fans with how he sets up his team.

The Portuguese coach’s record as a manager is also more impressive than Cooper’s on paper. He averaged 1.77 points per game across 101 matches in charge of Roma in the Serie A, off the back of an incredible 2.37 points per game in 139 matches managing Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. This suggests that his style of play and the results it leads to could make him a better option for Palace than Cooper, which is why Parish must bring him to Selhurst Park ahead of next season.

Major update in Spurs’ manager search

A major update has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search and it is sure to leave many supporters fuming…

What’s the word?

According to Daily Mail journalist Ian Ladyman, former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is moving fast through a depleted pool of candidates and has now emerged as the leading contender to finally replace Jose Mourinho.

The 47-year-old is said to have the backing of recently-appointed director of football Fabio Paratici and now chairman Daniel Levy too.

Spurs have missed out on as many as eight different candidates throughout the nine weeks since the Portuguese was sacked, so with pre-season now only ten days away, they must make an appointment sooner rather than later.

No to Nuno

Indeed, the pressure was already on Levy and co to find the right man, having been faced with fan protests in recent months, but the fact that so many names have come and gone is worrying. Despite the lack of remaining options, though, it seems that Nuno is not a popular option whatsoever.

The Lilywhites had initially pursued the likes of Bayern-bound Julian Nagelsmann, Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers and Ajax coach Erik ten Hag, but all were quickly ruled out of the running. They then attempted to make a sensational return for Mauricio Pochettino and held firm talks with Chelsea’s former Premier League-winning manager Antonio Conte.

Those names are certainly a cut above the recent ones mooted with taking over, including Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso – and just like the latter, a social media campaign has been trending actively against the appointment of Nuno.

Unlike the Italian, it’s not because of a controversial and brash past, but instead it’s over his brand of football and the lack of ambition the club are showing when there are names like Ernesto Valverde available on the market.

The responses to the Daily Mail’s report highlights exactly the mood in north London right now. For example, one supporter claimed that it would be a “devastating to end” their job search with a manager known for his “dour style of football” when there are plenty of other successful names out there.

Futhermore, another replied that it would be a “terrible appointment” which will have been “made out of desperation”, whilst a further fan suggested it was all just “embarrassing.”

Those may only be three responses but they all echo the thoughts of many who have pushed the #NoToNuno campaign on social media right now.

This latest news will likely leave many in N17 absolutely furious as their managerial hunt looks to be teetering towards a disappointing end.

AND in other news, Spurs can wave goodbye to Kane if Levy hires 47 y/o coach who shows a “lack of intent”…

Spurs in advanced talks for Thuram

Writing on Twitter, RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi has lifted the lid on an exciting transfer development at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Transfer window open…

The summer transfer window is now officially open and Tottenham will be hoping to strengthen sufficiently in time for the 2021/2022 campaign.

Spurs will need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy in order to fund marquee additions, with the club having suffered financially due to the pandemic.

However, that hasn’t stopped Spurs from scouring the market for possible signings – with an exciting development emerging courtesy of Bouhafsi.

The Latest: Journalist lifts lid on exciting development…

Writing on his social media, the reporter has now shed light on Tottenham and Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, he claims the Lilywhites have now entered advanced discussions with the player over a move to north London this summer.

“Marcus Thuram will leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer,” explained Bouhafsi.

“The player is in talks with Tottenham. It is a priority of the club.

“Sources close to the English club explain that the discussions have advanced in recent days.”

The Verdict: Quite a claim…

The window has been open for just one day and Tottenham are allegedly already making a significant move with these talks.

Thuram enjoyed a noteworthy 2020/2021 campaign with the German club, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 others in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The electric 23-year-old also averaged an impressive two shots on goal per match over his league outings, second only on his team to Alassane Plea (WhoScored)

Thuram did reign superior in completed dribbles, though, averaging 1.6 of them over 29 Bundesliga appearances (WhoScored).

As such, news of Spurs’ advanced discussions for a player with obvious talent and plenty of years ahead of him comes as pretty exciting.

'We are going up there with confidence' says Shine ahead of Scarborough trip

The Somerset players left Taunton earlier this afternoon to drive to Scarborough where they play Yorkshire in the county championship tomorrow

Richard Walsh09-Jul-2002The Somerset players left Taunton earlier this afternoon to drive to Scarborough where they play Yorkshire in the county championship tomorrow. After their drawn game against Surrey over the weekend there was a mood of confidence in the camp before they set off.Coach Kevin Shine told me: "The county championship table is wide open, apart from Surrey who seem to be running away with it at the top.At present there are only ten points between ourselves and Hampshire who are in third place, and they have a game in hand, so we will be looking to consolidate our position when we play Yorkshire."The coach continued: "We picked up decent points against Surrey over the weekend on a good wicket at Taunton. To win you have to play exciting cricket, and with our resources we have to plan carefully. Scarborough can be a funny wicket, and it will be very interesting to see what they do with it."He went on: "Last time they left a lot of grass on the wicket, so we will wait and see what they do this time. We have got a well balanced attack with Graham Rose, Steffan Jones and Matt Bulbeck, and Ian Blackwell and Keith Dutch."The coach concluded: "We are going up there with confidence and will perform as professionals."Jamie Cox , who will miss the championship match, but is expected to play in the NUL game on Sunday told me: "In short we need points to move ourselves up and away from the congestion in the table and into a better position."Matt Wood, who scored a hundred in each of his innings against Surrey at Taunton told me: "We need a good result up there, and I hope that my run of good form continues."Somerset bring veteran all rounder Graham Rose into replace the injured Simon Francis, and take the highly rated eighteen year old batsman Arul Suppiah as twelfth man.The full squad is: Matt Wood, Piran Holloway, Mike Burns, Peter Bowler, Keith Parsons, Ian Blackwell, Rob Turner, Keith Dutch, Graham Rose, Matt Bulbeck, Steffan Jones and twelfth man Arul Suppiah.

Man Utd should sell Andreas Pereira

Manchester United must axe below-par midfielder Andreas Pereira this summer as Ole Gunnar Solksjaer looks to build a title-winning squad.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via Manchester Evening News), the 25-year-old could rejoin Lazio in the upcoming transfer window despite enjoying limited success throughout a season-long loan spell in Rome.

Pereira made just three Serie A starts in 2020/21, but the imminent arrival of Maurizio Sarri at the Stadio Olimpico may offer the Brazilian another chance to impress.

He’s been shocking

The creative talent has failed to establish himself at Old Trafford, making just 75 appearances for the English giants over a six-year period and scoring a paltry four goals.

Pereira has experienced several loan spells away from United with mixed success, but a fruitful 12-month stint with Valencia throughout 2017/18 showed the potential for the South American to make a successful career with the Red Devils.

However, he failed to replicate that form back in the Premier League and he now finds himself unwanted by Solksjaer as the Norwegian aims to return the 20-time English champions to the summit of European football.

Although United made solid progress last season, recording consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, there is still a lot of work to be done before they can compete for major honours.

A group stage exit from the Champions League, a hugely disappointing defeat in the Europa League final and the 12-point gap to Premier League champions Manchester City all serve to illustrate the progress still to be made.

With resources expected to be limited due to the ongoing pandemic, United may have to raise some funds themselves in order to bring in the required talent needed to help them progress.

High-profile stars such as Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane and Raphael Varane have been linked with big-money moves in recent weeks, and the money generated from Pereira’s potential sale could help get those deals over the line.

The £30,000-per-week flop is currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, and adding that amount to the club’s transfer kitty by selling him would be a welcome boost for Solskjaer.

Steffan Jones pays tribute to 'Banger'

The morning after appearing for Wales in their historic victory over England at Cardiff, Somerset fast bowler Steffan Jones was in buoyant mood when I spoke to him

Richard Walsh25-Jun-2002The morning after appearing for Wales in their historic victory over England at Cardiff, Somerset fast bowler Steffan Jones was in buoyant mood when I spoke to him.He told me: "It was a really great day for Wales and for me, and I’m very pleased with my performance. It gave me a chance to show Duncan Fletcher how well I can bowl in one day cricket."The Welshman continued: " This is the start of my season now, after struggling for several weeks with an injury. I bowled quickly at the start , and then bowled again at the death, I was pleased with my figures of 1 for 27 off 9 overs. This was a big occasion for me and a shop window to show the England management just what I can do."I asked about the catch that dismissed his Somerset team mate Marcus Trescothick. He told me: "I caught him out at third man off Andrew Davies. One of the Welsh boys said that `Banger’ looked round after he hit the ball, saw it was me and gave a smile."Steffan paid tribute to the way that the acting England skipper had reacted at the end of the game. He said: "Banger was very gracious in defeat, and came across to us all and said well done. When the winning run was hit I wasn’t on the field, but Banger grabbed one of the stumps and gave it to Steve James to give to me. I really appreciated that."He concluded: "Now I’m back to full fitness I am looking forward to making a real contribution for Somerset."

Should Wolves consider Julen Lopetegui?

Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to quit Wolves last week came as a big shock.

He seemed happy and content with the direction in which the Old Gold were heading but, following a dialogue with Jeff Shi, he decided to hand in his resignation.

You can hardly blame him, either. The Portuguese was going to have small resources to work with this summer and they would have to sell their best players in order to spend big.

The Molineux outfit have consulted Jorge Mendes in their bid to find a new coach, with former Benfica manager Bruno Lage the frontrunner. Paulo Fonseca has also been in the frame but, according to Wolves legend Steve Bull, they should consider Julen Lopetegui.

When questioned by Football Transfer Tavern about whether he would be a good appointment, Bull commented: “I think so, I think so. There’ll be names bandied left, right and centre. If [Jose] Mourinho was free, you would have dropped him in the hat as well. But, you know, it’s just a lottery at the moment.”

Lopetegui has had an interesting couple of years in management. He was set to lead Spain at the 2018 World Cup but was relieved of his duties on the eve of the tournament after agreeing to become Real Madrid manager after the competition had finished.

Following a string of bad results, he was sacked in October of that year after just a matter of months at the helm.

He has enjoyed a fabulous renaissance with Sevilla, however, winning the Europa League with the Spanish outfit in 2020.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Lopetegui developed a system which involved wing-backs and turned the Andalucians into a defensive powerhouse. Considering how poor Wolves were at the back this term, he could prove beneficial in leading them back up the table.

The Old Gold kept just ten clean sheets from their 38 league games this term, letting in goals on a regular basis. In 14 league matches between October and January, they only maintained two shut-outs during a wretched run of form.

Lopetegui could ensure that this drastically improves. His Sevilla team kept an incredible haul of 25 clean sheets in 54 matches this season.

The 54-year-old dubbed Nuno a “great coach” when the two teams met last season in the Europa League and has enjoyed great success with a defensive duo of Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos. Those two defenders arrived during his first summer in charge, proving that Lopetegui knows what he’s looking for in the transfer market.

Basing his philosophy on a possession-based brand of football, that would suit a Wolves team with plenty of ball-playing midfielders and defenders in their team.

Lopetegui endured a turbulent year in 2018 but has since shown great dedication and focus at Sevilla. He should definitely be considered by Jeff Shi and Fosun.

Kenwright wants Moyes at Everton

Many Everton fans have been left to slam Bill Kenwright’s ideal choice to succeed Carlo Ancelotti as the next manager ay Goodison Park.

As per Football Insider, the chairman of the Merseyside club is championing David Moyes to be the next boss after Ancelotti departed for Real Madrid.

Kenwright wanted Moyes to replace Marco Silva when he left in 2019, and retains great admiration for the West Ham United coach.

He still remains a good relationship with Moyes, although any pursuit of the Scotsman is thought to be a long shot given that he is in advanced discussions over a new contract at the London Stadium.

Although Moyes has come off of the back of a great season with the Hammers, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, and was generally very successful with the Toffees before, guiding them to an impressive fourth-placed finish in the 2004/05 campaign, several Blues feel as if they do not want to go back to an old manager and instead focus on a new one to take them forward.

He was also largely unsuccessful at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland by virtue of league positions (Transfermarkt), showing that he does not guarantee success, and at 58 years of age, perhaps the Toffees should be targeting a younger boss with fresh ideas.

TEST DEBUT: Still awaited
ODI DEBUT: Still awaitedBIOGRAPHY (updated March 2002)Patrick Gada, Academy student in 1999, is one of the most promising young all-rounders in Zimbabwe. He is highly rated for his attitude and self-discipline. He is a non-smoker and does not drink alcohol; from a young age he practised hard and worked on his fitness. He is a pleasant and quietly-spoken young man who deserves to go far in the game.Like most black players at the present, Patrick has no family background in cricket, although his family has always been very enthusiastic about soccer. His interest in cricket began at Chengu Primary School in Highfield, a high-density suburb of Harare, and he well remembers the times when Dave Houghton used to come and coach. Later on Lazarus Zizhou and Dave Levy took over, and both had much to do with developing Patrick’s interests and skills. Patrick has always been first and foremost a batsman, but he has kept up his medium-paced bowling and occasionally bowls useful off-spin as well. He opened both batting and bowling from a young age.His first match, as far as he remembers, took place when he was about ten years of age. Once he scored 125 in a thirty-over game, when he was captaining his team, and won the Willards Trophy for his school. He took part in the national primary schools cricket week, captaining the Harare South team and being selected for the national B team.He progressed to Prince Edward High School, having been offered a place there by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union because of his cricketing potential. He had also been offered a place at Chinhoyi High School, but preferred Prince Edward mainly because of the better sporting and academic opportunities it provided. He was immediately appointed as captain of the Under-13 team and progressed up the school year by year. He remembers his best scores when he reached the first team as being 90 against St John’s and 78 against Eaglesvale, batting at number four. He used to bowl regularly as well, opening the bowling at times and taking useful wickets, with seven in an innings being his best performance. In 1995 he went on tour to England with the school team. He names the late `Bunny’ Brereton as the high-school coach who helped him the most.At school Patrick was also an athlete, notably in triple jump and long jump. He played rugby and soccer as well, but cricket remained his premier sport. He played his first club match in 1992, for Bionics Cricket Club, which became in turn Hungwe, Winstonians and now Takashinga. In 1993 Patrick was selected for the Mashonaland Under-15 team, where he did well and was a reserve for the national side; he progressed to the Mashonaland Under-19 team along with such players as Brian Murphy, Gavin Rennie, Darlington and Everton Matambanadzo and Gary Brent. Even at the age of 16 he made some good scores, but just missed selection for the national side. He left high school after gaining his O-Levels in Form Four, but hopes to improve his academic qualifications at some time in the future. He followed his cricket interests, doing some coaching privately in the high-density areas and assisting the Zimbabwe Cricket Union and the Mashonaland Cricket Association on a private, part-time basis. In 1995/96 he began to play for Old Hararians Sports Club, coaching and practising in Highfield and at Harare Sports Club during the off season. His best club performance has been 96 not out against Kwekwe in 2001/02. In 1998 he was encouraged by the Old Hararians captain Trevor Penney to apply for the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy, and he was accepted for the 1999 season. His main memory of that year, along with many other students, was the visit of the Australian Cricket Academy team, which completely outclassed the local academy, mainly due to the express pace of Brett Lee who terrorized the locals and caused Patrick himself much concern. "It was a great turning point for all the Academy guys," he says. From 1999 Patrick played and coached in England. It was a good experience, although he found the pitches too slow, sub-standard and uncovered. He did learn to adapt to the various pitches, both good and bad. In the years 2000 and 2001 he played for Preston Nomads in Sussex, enjoying both seasons with bat and ball. "It is always good fun and experience playing in the UK," he says. After leaving the Academy, Patrick went to Manicaland for the remaining two years of his Academy contract. He opened the batting for them in the Logan Cup and played some useful innings, gradually finding the confidence to play his strokes more readily at that level. In September and October 2001, after the English season, he also visited the United States of America and played in Florida and Hartford, Connecticut. He came across some good players, especially from the West Indies, and had a good time both on and off the field. On his return, having completed his three-year contract with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, he decided to return from Manicaland to Mashonaland, especially as he had family responsibilities after the death of his mother. He signed a new contract and returned to Takashinga, who are now based in his home town of Highfield. He enjoyed a good all-round season in the national league, and expected to finish with the most wickets and the best bowling average for the league season. As a batsman his main attribute, he feels, is his concentration and the ability to bat for long periods of time, while as yet he is not fully fluent with his strokes at the top level. He is a strong back-foot player, scoring the majority of his runs on the on side and square of the wicket, while he also cuts well. He admits to having difficulty with the moving ball outside the off stump but is working on the problem. He is happy to open the innings, but given the choice feels he would prefer number four or five. He usually fields in the middle distance or in the gully. He has a very safe pair of hands and enjoys fielding, and is fairly quick to the ball.Cricket heroes: Viv Richards, Richie Richardson and Graham Gooch.Toughest opponents: "Brett Lee still sticks out in my mind, no doubt about that, for his express pace! I would love to face him again sometime, hopefully take him on, but if not to stick around for a long period."Future ambitions: "I hope to stay in the game and keep working on my game all the time. It will take time, but I hope to keep improving. I would like to play cricket at the highest possible level, and do well. I also want to assist youngsters as we keep trying to build up Zimbabwean cricket. My biggest wish at the moment is to represent Zimbabwe in the coming World Cup as we host all our home games."Biggest influences: "My late mother, my dad in Highfield, my family and good friends all around the world."Proudest achievement: "I remember when I was captain of Harare South and my junior school in Highfield, the England A side came over, including Michael Atherton, Neil Fairbrother, Derek Pringle and `Sid’ Lawrence, in 1989/90, and I got an autographed bat from them. Then I was rated High Glen Best Junior Batsman, in 1990. Also when I was awarded my cricket colours at Prince Edward High School in 1994 for the most outstanding performance and service. Also meeting the master King Viv Richards at the Malcolm Marshall Memorial match in London in 2000, and again in America in 2001, in Hartford, Connecticut."Best friends in cricket: "Amos Maungwa – he’s always out there, he tries very hard and we play and practise together for Takashinga. All those who love the game and always think positively. My late mother and all my remaining family for all their trust, love and encouragement; Devon Malcolm, the Hopkins family and Mr John Smith, all in Sussex, England."Other interests: "I like reading, especially cricket magazines and current information. I like fitness training; every time I’m free I go out and work on my fitness. I also like listening to music and watching cricket on television or on tape."Personal views: "I would like to help juniors coming up and offer a helping hand from the knowledge I’ve gained from the game so far. I can’t wait to see Zimbabwe get on top of world cricket and dominate more than West Indies did and more than Australia will ever do. My young players for the future are team-mates Tatenda Taibu, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Hamilton Masakadza, and Joe Gatting (son of Mike) who plays for Preston Nomads and Sussex CCC juniors. My motto in life is to respect and learn from others, and above all give thanks to the Almighty."
