Jhulan Goswami to captain India

Jhulan Goswami takes over as captain from Mithali Raj © International Cricket Council

The new selection committee has sprung two surprises, naming Jhulan Goswami, the fast bowler, as India’s captain for the women’s tour of Australia and recalling the former captain Anjum Chopra to the 15-member squad. Goswami takes over from Mithali Raj, who led the team since the 2005 World Cup. The tour, starting October 28, features five ODIs and one Twenty20 international.”I am really excited and honoured by the Board’s decision to make me the captain of India,” Goswami told the .”I am ready for the job and looking forward to playing in Australia.”Goswami also welcomed the return of Chopra, who is India’s second highest run scorer in ODIs but last played for India in the Quadrangular Series in February 2007 in Chennai. The forthcoming tour will be India’s last series ahead of next year’s World Cup, also in Australia. “Anjum carries a great amount of experience which will help the side immensely. It is an important tour for us because the World Cup will follow soon after.”The other players making a comeback are batsman Anagha Deshpande, allrounders Reema Malhotra and Thirush Kamini and offspinner Nooshin Al Khadeer. Kamini was sent to Cricket Australia’s Centre for Excellence in August just before the tour of England.Raj said India’s 4-0 loss on their recent tour of England could have prompted the selectors to replace her. “England was miserable and that’s the reason I think the selectors chose to name another captain,” she said. “Jhulan is good. Her captaincy might give the team a much-needed boost, with the World Cup round the corner.”Squad:
Jhulan Goswami (capt), Rumeli Dhar, Jaya Sharma, Sulakshana Naik (wk), Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra, Thirush Kamini, Amita Sharma, Priyanka Roy, Snehal Pradhan, Gouher Sultana, Anagha Deshpande, Reema Malhotra, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Seema Pujare

Clark to miss NSW game

SYDNEY, Oct 7 AAP – NSW look certain to be without Australia A paceman Stuart Clark when it start its ING Cup cricket defence next weekend. The right arm fast bowler tore ankle ligaments in his left ankle in the latter stages of Australia A’s recent limited overs tour of South Africa.Clark was the Blues’ most consistently economical one day bowler last season conceeding just 3.65 an over.Arguably the most improved cricketer in Australia last summer, 27-year-old Clark is also likely to miss the Blues’ opening Pura Cup match against Queensland starting in Brisbane on October 16.His place in the one day team could go to all-rounder Grant Lambert who took five wickets for NSW against Tasmania in a second XI match last week. The only other forced change to the Blues team which beat Queensland in last season’s final in Brisbane will involve prize new recruit Simon Katich.Left handed batsman Katich, who has moved from Western Australia, blasted nine sixers in an innings of 177 in a club game for Randwick-Petersham on Saturday. When the NSW team for Sunday is announced tomorrow, 27-year-old Katich should fill the vacancy left by another left hander Mark Higgs, who has moved to South Australia.Higgs and Clark apart, the NSW selectors are likely to stick with the remainder of the team which beat the Bulls in last season’s final. However, international leg spinner Stuart MacGill who was the competition’s leading wicket taker last season but was unavailable for the final, should be available despite sitting out last weekend with a hand injury.Several NSW players displayed good form in round two of Sydney grade which finished today.Red hot batsman Matthew Phelps followed up centuries in the first club round and the second XI game with 136 for Manly against Penrith today.Australian limited overs star Michael Bevan made 38 while another of Manly’s NSW representatives Shawn Bradstreet scored an unbeaten 60.Corey Richards followed up twin centuries in the second XI match with 112 for Bankstown against University of New South Wales while Michael Clarke scored 78 for Western Suburbs against Sydney University.Shane Lee, who is likely to captain the Blues in the absence of Steve Waugh made just seven for Mosman against Randwick-Petersham.Michael Slater was unlikely to force his way back into the NSW one day line-up after being dismissed for four playing for University of NSW against Bankstown. The NSW side announced tomorrow will play a practice match on Wednesday against a team made up of other squad members and the half dozen New Zealanders who are currently playing club cricket in Sydney.

Gough knee injury flares up again

A further recurrence of Darren Gough’s knee injury has made him doubtful for the NatWest triangular one-day series against India and Sri Lanka.England’s premier fast bowler played in the City Challenge tournament at Edgbaston last Friday, and for Yorkshire’s Academy the following day. However he was unable to play in the Second XI Trophy game against Nottinghamshire yesterday.”It is the same knee problem as before and it looks as if it is back to square one for him,” Yorkshire captain Darren Lehmann told the Yorkshire Post.Gough tore a cartilage in his right knee during the final one-dayinternational in New Zealand, and has twice undergone surgery, missing England’s 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka.Gough’s regular new-ball partner for England in recent years, Andrew Caddick, has already been ruled out of the NatWest Series with a side strain.

Enjoyment of cricket the motivation for Hayward

A journey that began for a 25-year-old Richard Hayward looking for some employment in the English winter in 1979 reaches a new level when he takes up the position of Canterbury’s coaching director next month. The former English county professional with Hampshire and Somerset, has been living in Nelson where he was the first full-time professional coaching director appointed by a district association four years ago.It was a bold move by the Nelson association, always a front-runner in advancing cricket in its own region, and now the stage has been reached where most district associations should be employing full-time coaching co-ordinators as the result of a drive for increased coaching for districts and clubs by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).But Hayward is moving into the next phase of cutting edge cricket with Canterbury.”I’m really looking forward to it. It is a new challenge and something different.”It is a step-up from what I have been doing and with Canterbury Cricket doing some very exciting things, with their new building and their four-lane indoor training facility, it is a good time to be involved,” he said.Hayward’s role will be to look after coaches at all levels of the game, from junior schools with their MILO programmes through to clubs, with the new initiatives that will see all clubs have some coaching available to them through NZC’s efforts. From a broad-based role in Nelson, the job will be much more specific in Christchurch and he will not be so hands-on with teams. In Nelson he was dealing with all representative teams from Form One through to the Nelson senior side. Not surprisingly, given it is his trade, Hayward believes coaching development deserves a higher priority.”Coaching education has taken a back seat to player development. But if you can’t get coaches, you are not going to develop players.”One of my aims in Canterbury will be to get good quality coaches, and lots of them,” he said.Hayward is motivated solely by the desire that young players should enjoy their game sufficiently to want to be involved in it for a lifetime.”I am putting something back because I want people to get the same enjoyment out of cricket that I got.”And I do worry that kids are not enjoying the game as much as I did,” he said. The lack of players mingling after games, whether due to drink-driving regulations or because longer hours of work result in players having to get home quickly after games, is a real concern to him.”It is the responsibility of coaches to encourage mingling between sides. The most enjoyable part of cricket is meeting people.”And I know that Richard Reid, as chief executive, is looking to improve the enjoyment for clubs down there,” he said from Nelson.”We’ve got to make cricket more enjoyable, and we have to keep some of the older people in the game for longer,” he said.Having players retire at 30 was not good. It affected the quality of club cricket, and then districts cricket. The coaching side of the game started when Hayward was 25 and just starting to play professionally in England. He was looking for a job in the winter, and an uncle in Nelson happened to mention to Nelson cricket identity Jock Sutherland that he had a nephew seeking some work.”Billy Ibadulla had just finished coaching in Nelson and they were looking for someone. Jock Sutherland rang me and over a couple of phone calls we sorted things out. I was an English Level II coach by that stage.”I came out six years in a row. Then I bought a shop in Nelson and did some summer coaching and when Nelson appointed a full-time coach four years ago I jumped at the chance.”It was a bit of a financial punt for Nelson at the time, they were the first district association in New Zealand to do it,” he said. But since the news was relayed yesterday that Hayward was leaving the Nelson area, he has had nothing but goodwill and support for his decision. The only problem is that because Sutherland, his mentor, has been in England, he hasn’t been able to let him know. That apart, Hayward says he is “raring” to go in his new role.

South Africa beat Jamaica in one-day warm-up

South Africa made short work of Jamaica as they warmed up in professionalstyle for the one-day series against the West Indies which begins at SabinaPark on Saturday. In a game designed to give them a work-out in the shorterversion of the game, the South Africans ran out easy winners by six wicketsas they chased Jamaica’s modest 185 all out.Although Gary Kirsten (9) is still in search of his next big innings andBoeta Dippenaar played a loose shot to depart for 13, a half-century fromHerschelle Gibbs and 49 from Jonty Rhodes made sure there were no majorhiccups along the way.Gibbs struck six superb boundaries in his 80-ball stay before mis-timinga pull to mid-on and Rhodes was given out leg-before as he looked toshepherd South Africa home. Lance Klusener confirmed his return to form withthe bat, finishing unbeaten on 42. Justin Ontong ended the match with astraight driven six off Leon Garrick’s highly occasional off-spinners.Earlier Jamaica struggled after being put into bat by South Africancaptain Shaun Pollock. The start was decent enough as openers Garrick (20)and 20 year-old David Bernard Jnr (59) added 35 for the first wicket in theteeth of some fine bowling from Roger Telemachus in particular, but once thetourists made the first breakthrough, they turned the screw extremelyeffectively.Klusener picked up 5-23 from ten overs as he generated substantialswing, three times hitting the stumps as the batsmen played and missed.Ontong, playing in his first match in full South African colours, bowled atidy ten overs and finished with 2-37.Ricardo Powell provided the entertainment for a sparse crowd, smashingleft-arm spinner Paul Adams for three enormous sixes, two of them clearingthe Kingston Cricket Club pavilion on the square-leg boundary.Powell was last out for 52, run out after a mix-up with number elevenRyan Cunningham. He faced 60 balls and as well as the three sixes, he struckone four.

Malik ready to face ICC sleuths

Former captain Salim Malik said Wednesday that he was ready to meetICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) chief Sir Paul Condon if called. Condonand his two associates are scheduled to visit Pakistan between May 25and 27.Malik, banned for life by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on therecommendation of Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum’s judicial commission, said he came about Condon’s visit through newspapers. However said he has not receive any official intimation from the PCBto appear before the ACU. “Nevertheless, if I am called, I willdefinitely appear,” Malik said.

Hussain calls for improvement after Lord's Test

Looking back at the first Test at Lord’s, England captain Nasser Hussain was realistic enough to know that the rearguard action his team had carried off with such effect to save the match did not hide the inadequacies of the first three days. He also knows there will need to be an improvement at Edgbaston, especially with the prospect of Sri Lanka’s Murali Muralitharan being fit to take his place in the tourists’ line up.”There was talk of pride and the only ones who could put the wrongs right were the 11 that had been picked,” said Hussain. “We needed to do it for two days, not just one day or one session, and we showed a bit of character and fight to get a big score.”To be 275 all out on a flat one against Sri Lanka without Murali was not good enough. For three days we were poor, at stages we looked like never getting a wicket, then we got the edge and dropped it.”Hussain did not subscribe to the theory that his bowlers lacked match fitness because of the way contracted players are rested from county cricket.”These bowlers have been all around the world bowling their hearts out, and they played in the last county games and each bowled 30 overs or so. They had bowled more overs than the Sri Lankans who out-bowled them here.”Our bowlers lacked discipline and on this wicket against these batsmen you have to put the ball in the right areas all the time,” he said. “A similar attack showed a lot of discipline for six ballsan over in India, they have done it before and I know they can do it, they just have to do it more often.”Asked whether he would have preferred to have had a spinner in the side with hindsight, Hussain said: “If I picked a side again right now I still wouldn’t have picked Ashley Giles; not a ball turned.”One of the centurions of the second innings, Mark Butcher, clearly appreciated the need to produce the goods after the debacle of the first innings. “After the first innings we realised wedidn’t have to take any risks, or do anything too flashy. You could let the bowlers come to you on this wicket and that is what I tried to do. Now we can carry this confidence into the next Test.”Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya appeared undismayed by the fact that one of his left-arm pace bowlers, Ruchira Perera, had been reported for having a suspect action.”Anyone can comment on their own personal view, that’s not a problem. It doesn’t hurt at all,” he said. “The two umpires are out there and if the umpires report it to the match referee it would go through the proper procedures. We have no problems. He bowled well here and deserves to be in the team if he is fit.”

Mushfiqur and Sajib injured in on-field collision

Mushfiqur Rahim and Saqlain Sajib have been taken to hospital after suffering an on-field collision during the opening day of Rajshahi Division’s National Cricket League match against Dhaka Division in Mirpur. Of the two, Sajib was worse off after showing signs of disorientation. Mushfiqur, the Bangladesh captain, was taken for an MRI scan and was seen walking around in the dressing room a few hours after the incident. The pair went for a catch near the fine-leg boundary after Dhaka’s No. 11 Mohammad Shahid top-edged a Farhad Reza bouncer off the last ball of the 45th over.”The collision took place at around 1.30pm. They were given first aid but Saqlain was disoriented, he had memory loss. Mushfiqur was struck on the side of his face but he looked in better condition,” Dr Debashish Roy, the BCB’s chief medical officer, told ESPNcricinfo.”Saqlain had to be taken to the hospital immediately for a CT scan. Mushfiqur was in my room for a while before we took him for an MRI. He has responded better and as far as I am concerned, he will recover quickly. But still, we didn’t want him in the field.”Farhad Hossain, who was nearby when the collision happened, said that Sajib was struck on the left-side of his face while Mushfiqur’s nose immediately started to bleed. “Saqlain looked in bad shape. He couldn’t recognise anyone, but hopefully he’ll recover quickly,” Hossain said. Before the accident, Sajib, the left-arm spinner, took 4 for 33 and helped Rajshahi bowl out Dhaka for only 116 in the first innings. Mushfiqur didn’t go out to bat as Dhaka replied with 137 for 6 at stumps.
